| mjtriplett's Full Review: Aquaphor Healing Ointment Baby |
If you read no further in my review than this, just know that Aquaphor Baby Healing Ointment is the quintessential skin care product for babies.
My son had some bad skin irritation problems from 0-3 months old. He suffered from a recurring diaper rash that no amount of Desitin, Balmex, or even prescription Butt Paste could cure! He had a mild case of cradle cap that even extended somewhat to his eyebrows! He also had very dry skin on his chin from drooling and dribbling milk. Wait--before you picture my child as an ogre, this description sounds worse than he actually looked, I promise. But a description (especially from his mom) about all his cute characteristics is not appropriate for this review. Anyway, after trying other fixes--the above-mentioned diaper rash creams, Gerber cradle cap solution, and small dabs of Cetaphil as recommended by his pediatrician--we finally found Aquaphor Baby Healing Ointment and haven't looked back.
What is Aquaphor Baby Healing Ointment?
Aquaphor Baby Healing Ointment is a dermatologist and pediatrician recommended treatment for minor and common baby skin problems. It's made by Eucerin, a leading brand in skin care products. Aquaphor Baby Healing Ointment is a skin protectant that is primarily advertised as an alternative diaper rash solution.
Aquaphor Baby Healing Ointment can be purchased at most major retailers and drug stores and is available in a 14oz tub for $14.99 or in a 3oz squeeze tube for $6.99.
Aquaphor is fragrance & preservative free, and hypoallergenic, so it's safe for use on babies' sensitive skin.

Using Aquaphor
Besides being a diaper rash treatment, Aquaphor Baby Healing Ointment is an ideal treatment for any minor skin irritation or dryness, including chapped cheeks or cracked skin, minor cuts, scrapes, and burns, and dry skin.
To use Aquaphor you simply squeeze (or scoop)a liberal amount of the ointment onto your fingertips and gently spread it over the affected area.
My experiences with Aquaphor Baby Healing Ointment
I first tried Aquaphor on the most serious and bothersome of my son's skin problems--his recurring diaper rash. The ointment is the consistency of Vaseline: it's very thick and pasty-like, but it doesn't smell at all. I squeezed out a good amount onto my fingertips and liberally spread it over my son's bottom. It spreads easily, although it sticks on your hands and can make a greasy mess on clothing, so it's sometimes difficult with a squirmy baby. I used it at every diaper change until I saw that the redness and irritation was gone, which was only about 2-3 days! After that, I spread it liberally at night, when my son would be sitting in a wet diaper longer, and anytime a little redness would crop up. I have not seen that nasty rash since! It's so nice to know that my son is not uncomfortable anymore.
I also used Aquaphor to clear up my son's mild cradle cap. This is something I only recommend using if you aren't going out for the day, because otherwise your child's head just looks greasy and worse than the cradle cap. It's basically like spreading Vaseline over the area. I used much less than for the diaper rash, just little dabs of the ointment here and there on his dry scalp spots and a teeny bit on his eyebrows. I allowed the ointment to sit overnight several nights in a row. By the 3rd day, there was significant improvement and after a week of use, all but a very few dry spots were gone! I was amazed. And I didn't need to keep applying it nightly either; I only used it about 3-4 more times after that on my son's scalp and the cradle cap never came back.
Finally, I used Aquaphor for my son's chapped chin and cheeks, which was a result of his incessant drooling and messy eating. I would just dab a little on the area before bedtime, and by morning any chapped skin appearance was *poof* gone! It's like a miracle product, honestly.
I still use Aquaphor on my son's chin during his terrible teething & drooling periods. I've also used a dab for the small scratches he's given himself with sharp nails. It came in handy once for relief and healing of a small minor burn that my husband got while removing a pizza from our oven. It's a pretty versatile product and now a staple in our household.
One caveat
I love Aquaphor Baby Healing Ointment and can live with its messiness, but you may not like it if you can't stand a greasy consistency. Like Vaseline, Aquaphor is greasy and does not "soak in" to the skin, but just kind of sits on the surface for healing. Therefore, it can rub off on clothing or bedsheets and make a mess.
