I love my new Apollo Bio Fins. I decided to buy them after talking to a fellow diver in Hawaii and hearing from an instructor, that with the new fins, I would likely enjoy more time underwater. One may ask how will new fins help a diver stay under longer? Well, considering my old fins were 17 years old it is easy to see that the change in philosophy on how fins should be designed. The new designs cause less fatigue, which translates to lower air consumption and longer dive times.
Now you have an idea of why I went from my trusty old fins to some of the most expensive fins available. Aside from the fact they are a nice color; black, which meshes with my other gear well. Really, it was a hard decision. Who wants to spend more for a set of fins than a tank would cost? In fact there are even less expensive dive cameras with which one can capture pictures of the sites they visited. Several factors came into play when I decided to go ahead and spend the bucks.
First big consideration; I wanted to be among the last to run low on air before leaving the water. These fins were helping other accomplish longer dive times. Of course, physical fitness plays a role also. While diving, I did not have to make big kicks to propel myself through the water. This helped add bottom time to my dives.
Second consideration; I wanted a fin that is very comfortable for those longer dives. Wow, I got a fin here that is so comfortable it is easy to forget they are on. I instantly began to feel more like a fish and less like a diver with these fins in place. These fins are nice and comfortable. They are open toed which helps prevent that squished feeling closed toe fins can have. Also, they are relatively well balances so the weight of the fins is not concentrated in one area of the fin exclusively.
Third consideration; I wanted something new and efficient. The design of these fins really helps push the diver along much faster with less effort. This is part of what Apollo advertises when they are selling their fins. There were only a few choices out there for the new high tech fins. Of the choices Apollo seemed to have the best design and had the most followers. So to satisfy my desire to have an efficient fin I went with Apollo.
Fourth consideration; I wanted a fin that I could easily get on and off in the water. With the click in/out strap one can easily put the fins on or take them off in a boat or the water. This makes getting out of the water back onto smaller boats easy. Snap off the strap near each ankle and hand the fins up to the dive master on the boat.
Overall I am very satisfied with my choice. The fins fit well, are east to adjust, propel me through the water with little effort, and are just plain neat. Everyone with whom I dove over the last week all wanted to know how I liked the fins. I was able to honestly answer that they are great.
I recommend to those divers who want comfortable fins that are high tech and allow you to spend more time under water, these fins are for you. The money will be well spent when you are able to cover more reef and have more down time over less dives, which when considered from an economics position, helps pay the high cost of these new fins. Go get some!
