Just What I've Been Looking For!
A few years ago I began reading about the dangers of chemicals leeching into my food when using plastic containers for food storage and cooking my food in the microwave. Not to mention the destructive job that the microwave can do on some plastic materials while nuking your food!
I began looking for glass storage containers to replace my plastic. I remember telling my husband that I wish I could find the glass containers like the ones they made "years ago". I opted for a set of assorted sized glass containers, except they still had the plastic lids. At least they were better than all plastic! These did nicely for me until I discovered Anchor Hocking Glass Storage Containers. I am elated that Anchor Hocking has reintroduced this type of storage container to the market.
Cost
At the price of nearly $9 a shot, these containers can really add up. I am gradually replacing my plastic containers with these. The sturdy glass, if well cared for, will last a lifetime. I could buy a cheap set of plastic containers for the same price as one Anchor Hocking Refrigerator Container, but then I'll get what I pay for!
Is Plastic Really A Threat to my Health?
This is a controversial subject. There is proof that when foods are covered with plastic wraps and then microwaved, the plastic can and does leach into our food! The same goes for heating foods in certain plastic containers. I have actually had some plastics melt right into my food while microwaving them!!
You may be aware that since 1986 toy manufacturers have been removing plasticizers from childrens toys and pacifiers because of their ability to leach into a childs mouth.
Most "cling" wraps are made from polyethylene or polyvinyl chloride (PVC). DEHA is a chemical that is added to PVC, and has been said to be linked to cancer, gene mutations, and toxicity related to other illnesses. A study was done on the subject where cheese was wrapped in 19 different types of polyvinyl plastic wrap. The average level of DEHA found in the cheese was an alarming 153 parts per million (ppm) - (the limits in Europe are only 18 ppm). Obviously, the chemicals from the plastic did leach into the cheese. When plastic is heated, as it is when used in a microwave, this problem is exasperated.
There is a huge proliferation of "xenoestrogens" in our environment today. Some experts partially blame plastics for this, as they are accused of containing man made estrogens. It has been said that any detrimental reproductive effects that plastics have had on animals are not relevant to humans. They may be right, or they may be wrong. I choose to err on the safe side.
Final Thoughts
I love these containers! Since the Anchor Hocking company has been around since 1905, I can count on them to provide me with quality products for a long time to come!
I love the fact that I can quickly store a small amount of leftovers in the 3 cup size, or use the 6 and 12 cup versions for more sizable portions. The containers stack sturdily one on top of the other, and since they are clear glass, I can see at a glance what leftovers are in my fridge! I routinely take the glass containers out of my fridge and microwave the contents for lunch. (No more bubbly plastic containers for me!)
I consider glass a safer and healthier alternative for food storage, and that belief makes these containers a winner in my book!
