| sblaydes's Full Review: American Girl Today Sandy the Dog |
When my daughter was surfing through the American Girl catalog a few months prior to Christmas she was so excited when she came across the American Girl Today Sandy the Dog. I mean
very excited! To those who know my daughter it really should come as no surprise. One, she loves her American Girl products. Two, she just adores animals. When she showed me a photograph of the American Girl Today Sandy the Dog I knew that this was one item that Santa would be definitely be brining her for Christmas!
For the remainder of this review I will be referring to this dog simply as Sandy
~ A new pet for Christmas! ~
When the unwrapping of presents had finally concluded on Christmas morning my daughter was anxious to begin playing with some of her new items. I was not surprised in the least when Sandy appeared next to my daughter on the kitchen table as one of the first items to be played with. I have to admit, Sandy is pretty darn cute. Want to know the thing that I like best about her? She doesnt shed!
According to the American Girl website Sandy is a true beach dog. She wears a lavender bandanna and is completely posable. She even barks when you press her paw. Personally, I think that Sandy is adorable. As you can tell from the photo image above Sandy is tan in color. While the majority of the fabric on her is smooth in texture, there are three areas on her that appear more hair like or furry. Those areas would be her tail, ears and on the front of her chest. .Sandy has brown eyes and a cute little black nose that are made out of plastic. She also sports a few spots on her face that I assume are to look like whiskers? And Sandys mouth is stitched on her.
Sandy actually is a good size pet. From the top of her head to her paws she measures in at approximately 7 ½ inches in height. Measuring from the end of her tail to the tip of her nose she comes very close to 12 inches. Since American Girl features Sandy as the companion to American Girl Today Kailey, I think that Sandy is a perfect height.
As I mentioned above, Sandy also comes with an accessory item
a bandanna. This purple bandanna is so darn cute! Also shown on the design work on this bandanna are the words American Girl running throughout this design. What a cute little design feature (and publicity) that is. This bandanna is stitched on the front side (on Sandys chest) so that it does not come off. Personally, I like this feature because it is just one less item to be lost. Im pretty certain that this bandanna could be cut off if wanted, but
Im not going to be proposing that idea to my daughter.
The other item that is stitched onto Sandy are her ears. They are currently stitched near the lower ear so that they stay in place. My daughter and I both looked at this. When you look at the American Girl catalog Sandys ears appear to be a bit floppy. While it does appear that there are strings there for me to cut to allow Sandys ears to become floppy, we have concerns that I would cut the fabric on Sandy making a hole. So, we have opted to just keep Sandys ears stitched like they are for now.
Probably one of the features that my daughter likes the best (Besides Sandys cuteness!) is the fact that her legs are posable. This allows my daughter to pose Sandy in the sitting and standing position. Ive even seen Sandy sitting with one paw down and the other up in the air like she is going to shake. Too cute
And then I was completely shocked when I realized that Sandy could bark. If you press down on Sandy's left paw, Sandy will let out three quick barks. Believe it or not, you can actually go the American Girl web site and hear Sandys bark. No, I am not kidding. Now, how this barking works Im not really sure. I also am not sure what to do if the barking suddenly stops. Why? There is no area shown on the bottom of Sandy's left foot to change a battery if needed. If I find out more details about this I will update my review. For now I can say that Sandys barking feature is a cute addition to an already cute puppy.
The only other detail that I want to mention about Sandy is that she should not be emerged in water. It wouldnt be good for her barking mechanism or her posable legs as well. Our Sandy has not gotten dirty yet, but
if she does I would just try a damp (clean) cloth to spot wash her.
~ This dog is a keeper ~
My daughter has been thrilled with the addition of Sandy. Not only does she play with Sandy with her American Girl dolls, but she will also play with Sandy individually or with the other twenty or so stuffed animal dogs that she has. I have found the quality of Sandy to be quite high, which is something that I have come to expect from American Girl.
Purchasing Sandy is quite simple. You can either purchase her on-line at the American Girl web site (address below), by mail via the American Girl catalog or you can call American Girl toll free at 1-800-845-0005. I have made purchases from American Girl all there ways in the past and have never experienced any troubles. When you get your Sandy in the mail she comes in a cute American Girl Today box that was easy for me to wrap and disguise.
So yes, this Mom and daughter team would highly recommend Sandy the Dog for the American Girl and pet lover in your household. For $18.00 she has quite easily become one of my daughters favorite pets. Sandy is yet another American Girl product that I have not been disappointed in.
