| smjackson's Full Review: John Saxon - Algebra I: An Incremental Development |
Saxon math curriculum is highly recommended by home school experts such as Cathy Duffy and Mary Pride. It is an excellent system due to the review that is built into each lesson. Students are given a new concept each lesson, but previously learned concepts are continuously reviewed and reinforced, so that they are not forgotten. Another unique feature that I love is that you do not have to teach a separate geometry course. By the time a child completes the Saxon program, they have a full course in geometry because it is interwoven throughout the other courses!
Saxon Algebra 1 is designed for 9th or 10th grade students. The hardcover book, with a durable binding that will survive numerous kids, contains 132 lessons. If you desire to test, you will need to buy the test booklet also. The student text only contains the answers to the odd numbered problems in the back. I recommend buying the "Homeschool Kit" which has the text, the tests, the answer key, and the solutions manual that shows how the problems are solved, step by step.
Here are just a few of the topics covered in this course:
exponents, positive and negative numbers, solving equations, scientific notation, ratio, percentage, geometry, English-metric conversion, factoring, complex fractions, polynomials, word problems, and more.
Each lesson gives very detailed examples of the new concept that is to be learned, a handful of practice problems to practice the new concept, and 30 problems to be solved. The problems include the new concept, as well as review problems from previously learned concepts.
My son has used Saxon Math since 5th grade and makes wonderful scores on the Iowa Test of Basic Skills! I have also been told by friends with older children, that their kids have been able to do well on Advance Placement tests when testing out of college courses!
I highly recommend Saxon Algebra 1 in addition to the rest of the Saxon Math series!
