Pros: good for sports coverage Cons: not comprehensive and a bit light on substance
I have always approached the USA Today with a bit of trepidation. I have always been a little leery of its claim to be the USAs newspaper. It seems a bit pretentious for a paper to make such a lofty claim. It would also seem ...
Pros: Excellent presentation; Colors get your attention; Useful and entertaining stats Cons: Articles only scrape the surface; Money section is lacking
Newspapers are invaluable for bringing national current events, local issues, sports, weather, and entertainment into the homes and offices of millions of people each day. Most every sizable city in the United States (50,000+) has at least one publisher ...
Pros: Entertaining, national news Cons: Not that in-depth or thought provoking
If you know me at all, you will know that I am a traveling fool. In less than a year, I have logged over 100,000 airlines miles and have over 75 hotel stays. So what does all this have to do with a newspaper? Well, quite a lot, actually. Half of ...
Pros: superior coverage of news, sports, business, consistent, great look, graphics. Cons: Is not meant to be exhaustive, but some hold that against it.
This is a reposting of the original review of USA Today originally posted August 1, 2000. When USA Today started a few years back, I was one of those doubters who thought it would fold quickly. The very thought of having a paper printed ...
Pros: Short and to the point. Pretty colors! Cons: newsprint, not in depth enough in some articles
USA Today, a nice little newspaper.
Free in many hotels. Not a bad deal.
USA Today is a quick read. Articles are never very long or in depth. One could possibly read USA Today while driving to work. If you live in a city, you would...
Pros: Simple, concise. Cons: Headlines change when story is continued; CNN as good.
USA Today doesn't cater to the elite, the pseudo-intellectuals, or those who wouldn't be caught dead reading a "common person's" paper. Yet, the newspaper doesn't talk down to readers. Among the regular features are items of interest to everyone...
Pros: More biodegradable than foam packing peanuts Cons: Lacks depth, lots of silly stories
Can we talk? I know there are reviews here that both love and hate USA Today, and I understand that just one more epinion probably won't change your mind if you've already decided whether or not to read USA Today. But if you're still undecided,...
Pros: Readable, Consumer-Oriented, and National in Scope Cons: "Magazine" Format
I first started reading "USA Today" during the two years I lived in South Dakota. The "Sioux City Journal" just didn't give me the feeling that I was keeping up with world events.
Of course, because we lived in a town of about...
Pros: Colorful, stories are easy to read. Cons: Stories lack depth

Pros: Few words are right words; graphic charts; sports section; nationwide availability Cons: Very short sections; prone to discombobulation
USA Today covers the Unites States in as few words as possible each and every issue. While newspapers such as the New York Times or Washington Post have nationwide distribution, they are still provincial newspapers which have...
Pros: Fast, Detailed and easy to follow Cons: who needs national Classifieds?
USA Today. I love it. I read where you either love or hate it, well..I love it. It covers the nations events, and yes, maybe in small amounts or Tid-bits but come on..what more do we really need. This is a great newspaper for all interesting...
Pros: makes elitists foam at the mouth, provides a lot of information quickly Cons: state-by-state roundup could be stronger
USA Today's reputation as "McPaper" persists from the strength of the bandwagon, not from a legitimate analysis of its content. Much of the criticism is based on the "it has color, it must be evil" theory. Like Soul Asylum once said,...
Pros: short stories that don't continue 20 pages away Cons: short stories that lack depth and detail
I first encountered USA Today when staying with my significant other on business trips. This was often the paper that the hotel gave to us as complimentary reading. I can understand this. It is short, so the bellboys didn't have to carry much material to...
Pros: Quality composition, easy to read, entertainining, informative Cons: No in-depth, Headline News of Newspapers
Okay, I'm ready to take the criticism, but to me USA Today is a trendsetter for survival of today's papers.
I read other reviews here and I agree that it is not hard-core, in-depth news and comes no where an equal to New York Times, but it's...
Pros: A paper for the mass, read it if you don't want to think hard Cons: As low as you can get, lack of class or hard reporting
Due to the lack of a better local newspaper, I resort to reading USA Today for my light reading time during sieste. This is the time I allow myself to just go with the flow and not bother thinking hard. I have nothing against some of its writers and...
Pros: GREAT COLOR, LAYOUT, FORMAT Cons: Stories lacking literary expertise
Ever since the introduction of USAToday in the 80's, the entire international newspaper market has completely changed. USAToday provides an easy to read, understand, and comprehend format that is also very visually appealing. Through it's colorful...
Pros: covers all 50 states every day Cons: this is written to the lowest common denominator
Those of you that have read my previous reviews on the media understand my opinions on the difference of quality between televised news and the written media.
Ted Koppel (ABC News) is famous for saying that only an idiot would rely on...
Pros: Easy to Read, Adequate News Coverage Cons: Not Particularly Hard-Hitting or Insightful
I don't know anyone who regularly buys USA Today, but I don't know anyone who hasn't read it at some point, either. This ubiquitous paper is delivered "by Satellite" to the doorstep of hotel room across the nation, each and every morning. It...
Pros: Excellent unbiased reporting Cons: not lots of depth to the reporting
USA Today is touted by many as the quick read of America's news. Actually, it is dropped outside of 90% of the hotel rooms I have stayed in during my travels for the last 15 years on the road and certainly, it is in every plane on every flight in most...
I have to disagree with poseidon. Sorry bud :>
I trust every one of his opinions and although he did hit the nail on the head with this one, I LIKE the USA today for exactly the reasons he does not.
Pros: keeps you up to date Cons: nothing i can see
I would like to let you know about a good news paper. I should of picked it up before I went on my trip. I was down town Portland Oregon this morning and wattling on the city bus so I wanted something to read. So I picked up a USA Today newspaper. It...
Pros: lines the bottom of the bird cage Cons: too many to list
I can't see how anyone can take this seriously. You read the thing in half an hour and still wonder what is happening in the world. It makes a mockery of journalism. I have never paid for one of these myself. I wake up in the morning at hotels and...
Pros: readability, sports coverage Cons: lack of depth, no weekend editions
This paper is frequently criticized for its brevity and its emphasis on colors and graphics. Well, for better or for worse, many major papers have adopted aspects of that style. I will admit that USA Today will not give you the same depth as The New...
Pros: Nothing, nothing at all... not even that many pages to wrap up fish with Cons: Everything under the sun!
I was in an airport in Nashville recently on a layover, and I saw a copy of the USA Today lying on an empty seat, and seeing that I had an hour to kill, I decide to give it a look. I know think that this particular newspaper has ruined my health. Yes,...
Pros: A fast and easy update, coverage of all sports teams Cons: no local coverage or comics
When reading USA Today you have to know what you are looking for. If you want in depth analysis and news about your local area, you are out of luck. If you want to catch up on the news of the day and what the rest of America is thinking about, you are...
Pros: Quick coverage of ALL the top news stories Cons: not very quality journalism
Lets face it - the USA today never was, and probably never will be, meant to be hard-hitting in depth journalism. Granted, most articles are not very in-depth nor investigative, but they are not meant to be. Yet if we take the USA Today for what it was...
Pros: Excellent balance of everything that interests people Cons: none. subscribe as quickly as possible!
USA Today has been one of the highlights of my life. It is where i get the majority of my knowledge about what is going on in the world around me. The paper is split up into 4 sections: News, Sports, Money, and Life.
Pros: Quick read on the latest events. Cons: Late sports scores!!!
Slick packaging and digestible news is nothing new. It just happens that USA Today has managed to perfect it and market it to the nation. In an age of MTV (and other things that are blamed for killing our attention span), USA Today is a valiant attempt...
Pros: Easy for kids to read, recyclable. Cons: Doesn't go into depth, articles aren't written well.
The USA Today as a national paper designed for nearly illiterate people. Its articles seem as if they are meant to entertain as opposed to educate. The articles also rarely go into depth about any past events. The USA Today seems like it is more of a...
Pros: Nice format, easy-to-read, convenient Cons: No in-depth articles, poor editorial pages, no local/state news coverage
USA TODAY just got a makeover! I picked up this national daily this morning, and was surprised to see a cleaner and more compact paper. One of the improvements made to the paper are the larger found, narrower paper size and other cosmetic improvements....
Pros: Good organization and national news coverage Cons: Lacks depth
USA Today is one of the most popular national newspapers available. It is just as available as NY Times or the Washington Post. Most major cities have newspaper racks with USA Today in them and most convience stores and supermarkets carry USA Today on...
Pros: Great summary of the day's news Cons: No weekend edition. Some issues are a bit skimpy.
I read the USA Today religiously every day. Why? Despite numerous criticisms throughout the country of it being a watered down "McNewspaper," I find the USA Today to be a thorough, mostly unbiased source for quick information about the world...
Pros: Condensed version of major news... Cons: May not be as in Depth as major cities daily's
USA Today is the Reader's Digest condensed version of the major newspapers across the country...It gives us pretty much all we would ever need to know about current events and weather for the entire country and enough international news that really is of...
In our house USA Today is our main source of world news. Though we also read our state newspaper each day, USA gives us more coverage of world news and usually a day earlier than the other papers.
Pros: Quick and to the point stories, Colorful and easy layout Cons: Sometimes lacking in depth on certain stories
I first started reading the Usa today regularly at the end of 99 in mid December. I always liked the format of the paper and even though the paper doesn't go into Extreme depth on most of it's issuses it gives me the basics of what's going...
Pros: Good sports and business section. Cons: No localized coverage. Life section sucks
I must say that I don't travel much. I usually travel about 2-3 times a year. However, when I travel and happen to be in a part of the country in which I could careless about what happens locally, I will read a USA Today. Sure, the writing is very...
Pros: Colorful graphics, short articles Cons: Grade-school level writing, science articles have errors
I must admit I've read "USA Today" more than a few times; I almost always buy it when I want some stock market information, and I can't get a hold of the "Wall Street Journal". Otherwise, I can't think of a single reason to read...
Pros: brevity Cons: lack of depth, lack of original content, and blandness
USA Today is brief, which given its generic content, is a good thing. A person reading this and any other reputable newspaper probably won't find an original piece of content in USA Today.
Pros: shreds easily, makes a good birdcage lining Cons: kills trees, hard to wipe ass with
The only paper I've read that is worse than McNewspaper is the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The statistics at the bottom of the front page are particularly useless; they're a lesson in lying through statistics.
Pros: fairly comprehensive, lively writing Cons: most articles too short
I've worked as a reporter and editor at USA TODAY for the past decade. As usual, people seem split between loving us and hating us. No matter how you feel, the paper has tried hard to increase its sophistication level the past few years - hiring...
Pros: It covers politics, money, sports, and life in one paper. Cons: The coverage is not always comprehensive.
I first began subscribing to USA Today when the local paper went on strike. It was a big improvement. I am not going to say that it is the best newspaper, but it is pretty good. The coverage is sometimes focussed on unimportant issues. For example,...
Pros: great news coverage, detailed stories Cons: no cons!!!
If you want to be updated on what's going around in the USA, you MUST pick up a copy of USA Today. This newspaper has been in existence for several decades and is JAM-PACKED with great information, news, photos, and much much more!! If you are just...
Pros: Quick Read, Timely and interesting articles, article synopsis in each section, colorful Cons: Too much sports information
My job requires significant travel. USA Today is usually available at every hotel I stay in. I don't often have a lot of time to read long newspaper articles, but do enjoy keeping current. This newspaper writes concise news stories. The synopsis...
Pros: Great graphics, broad coverage Cons: The Microsoft of newspapers
I've been a newspaper/TV journalist since 1964 and find USA Today an excellent companion to the local papers. True, it's "America's paper" so you won't find much local news, but they do provide, in my humble opinion, some excellent...
There are very few publications on the market today that inform the reader in an unbiased and knowledgeable way. "USA TODAY", with its brightly colored pages and copious entertainment and sports pages, informs not. Rather, it disinforms....
Pros: Great Style, Layout, & Colorful Newspaper That Covers Both National & International News Cons: None
USA Today Newspaper is an top rate national newspaper filled with great style, layout, and color. USA Today offers great insight in national and international news, politics, issues, weather and sports. I highly recommend this delightful newspaper for...
Pros: a quick read, with more depth than it used to provide. you'll get more here than you will from most local TV news shows. Cons: still heavy with fluff. most articles leave you asking questions that go unanswered. not much depth editorial pages are bland
I was not a big fan of USA Today at the outset. I was turned off by its emphasis on style over substance. Its focus on graphics, layout and factoids came at the expense of good writing and reporting. It wasn't as sensationalistic as local TV news,...
I have to agree with the masses in saying that USA Today skims the surface on news worthy articles. Happily for me, that is exactly the reason why I buy it every day on my lunch break.
Whether I am packing my lunch from home or picking up...
Pros: good for those learning to read Cons: bad for everyone else
usa today: little, little words and big, big pictures. if you've got a 5 year-old in the house who is just learning how to read, toss this his or her way. otherwise, save it for when you're house-breaking your pet.
Pros: Weather, sports, aesthetically pleasing, improving international and Washington coverage Cons: For the simple minded, lousy op-ed page, soft news on the front page
When I think of the American capitalist system, through which large overbearing corporate behemoths control our lives I think particularly of brand names which we Americans can't avoid. McDonald's, Disney, and Nike are just a few which come to mind....
Pros: "Today's Debate" section Cons: fluff, fluff, and more fluff
As a press office consultant, I read several papers daily. USA Today is one of my favorites because, while other papers sport boring, even depressing headlines like "Earthquake in China leaves 40 dead", I can count on USA Today to come back...
I do a lot of travel for business. It is often difficult waking up in a new city and not knowing what is going on. Fortunately most nicer hotels provide the USA Today for guests. Well, at least they do on Mondays through Fridays. It is this paper to...
Pros: When I don't have time, this paper does the job. Cons: Fifty cents a day is a lot for this paper, when THE WASHIINGTON POST is only twenty-five cents.
USA TODAY, is like the "quicker picker upper." When I don't have a lot of time, or I'm travelling and I want a quick fix of the day's news, I like what USA TODAY has to offer. I'm interested in a lot of different things, and I think USA TODAY...
Pros: Comprehensive news from the U.S. Cons: Most stories are too short; too much politics
This review concerns the International Edition of USA Today. It's not found on many newsstands, but the International Edition of USA Today is available where I live in Japan. I subscribed because I wanted a daily dose of news from the States without ...
Pros: Informative, interesting, quick to read.. Cons: Could have more depth at times.
USA Today presents mostly national news in an easy to read format that I can complete over a cup of coffee. I am a news junkie so this is usually my second paper of the day, after my local news.
USA Today covers most topics with enough depth,...
Pros: pretty colors Cons: targeted to 11-year-olds
when i was in college, majoring in communication, we used to refer to usa today as "mcpaper". even as students we felt we could write better, but certainly more complete stories, and who could take a newspaper seriously that only had one issue...
I think USA Today is the best newspaper for sports. It also provides us with up to date news that effects our world today. It is especially great if you read the sports section sometimes it will have an extra sports page for a big sporting event. The...
Pros: Excellent readings, excellent covering of all the subjects each day Cons: Not at all the supermarkets
Up to date world, economics, airline and sports news....last minute news from your favorite sport no matter how minor your sport is.....coverage that you will quite possibly not find in your hometown paper, for the same price as your hometown...
Pros: Easy format, easy content Cons: Lacks depth; lacks local news
USA Today has a place in this world. The place is diners, subway cars, briefcases. It's a newspaper for busy people who want a quick glance at the news, presented in an attractive, eye-catching format and summarized without any particular art or...
Pros: Good broad brush national paper Cons: Low on local issues
I am on the road a lot, so I do not subscribe to a local newspaper. As I travel from place to place, it is nice to have some good reading to pass the time in the airports and on the planes.
USA Today, is a good general purpose paper. If you...
Pros: Excellent News Coverage Around The United States & World Cons: None
If your looking for a more complete newspaper with news from around the United States and around the world then look no further than USA Today newspaper. They provide you with compete up to date news of what is happening around the United States as well...
Who really has the time to read a paper that takes over an hour to read? Who really wants to spend that much time reading a paper anyway? We all have busy lives, we need news and information in sound bites.
Pros: Good sports and financial numbers, easy to read Cons: Reading often too lite, no weekend issues
USAToday has been around for a good time now, and is one of the most popular (if not THE most popular) newspapers in the World in terms of daily circulation numbers.
I have read both domestic and international versions of the paper (which have...
Pros: national coverage is good Cons: not enough in depth coverage
USA Today is an excellent newspaper, that is, if you like brief stories
stories from sections of the United States. It sort of capsules events
from around the country. The newspaper started out at a time when cable
television was not as...
Pros: None Cons: Superficial, shallow, lack of depth
I can truthfully say that I have never purchased USA Today but have read it in the workplace or when I have found a copy lying around in places such as doctors offices, etc. I think that a paper like USA Today has started the downfall of newspapers as...
Pros: Interesting, short stories, informative Cons: Too many ads
USA Today is such a genius idea: the attention span of America's readers combined with their lack of time to actually read the newspaper equals shorter news bits and no "continued on next page" stories. Thus, USA Today has become such a...
USA Today has the dubious distinction of being the paper you can buy at McDonald's. It's somewhat fitting, though - the two are similarly pervasive, ubiquitous, and unremarkable. If you want the best food, or the best journalism, you'll surely look...
Pros: Has many sections to read Cons: Articles are rather small in length
USA Today calls themselves the nation's newspaper. However, it doesn't do such a great job of being that. The problem comes with the brevity of the articles. They may give you the gist of the article. But you might feel that you are lacking something...
Pros: a lot of information Cons: condensed; confusing
This paper wastes no time with personal preludes, but gets right to the good stuff. You can read a three-paragraph article that sums up what other papers ramble on and on about for pages. This is sometimes a good thing, and it's sometimes hard to...
Pros: Nice factoids, to the point, easy to read. Cons: No comics, bad local news coverage.
Anyone who says that the USA Today is not a newspaper must be out of their mind. It's concise, easy to read, and interesting. Sure, it doesn't go in-depth, but that's what the internet is for. If you really want to find out more than 3 paragraphs about finding a new fish species in Alaska, then google that. But, I really don't care. I also like the interesting factoids at the bottom of the pages. It's nice to hear what people say about other than the most important issue in the world. (It's nice to know what people think about illegal immigration, but it's fun to know how many like to file taxes.)
The one thing it doesn't do well is local stories. What I would like to see it do is have a local Gannet paper publish a 8-page newspaper on what happened in that area and add that to the USA Today. But, you can also watch the news or go to your local paper's website.
I mostly read this paper in hotels, where it is often offered free. While the news coverage is fine, I'm not as impressed with the quality of its editorial coverage.
