Movies That Crack Me Up!!
Sep 22 '00 (Updated Oct 22 '00)
Well, everyone's got those movies that they can watch over and over again, and still have tears in their eyes from laughing so hard. Each has their own favorites, their own tastes, but here I present to you my humble pics for the Best Comedies Ever!!
10. Clue - This is a pretty old movie based on the board game Clue. It's set as a house party where all of the guests (having the classic game names so as not to disclose their real names, Ms. White, Colonel Mustard, Mr. Green, etc) are all being blackmailed by the host... and then someone kills Mr. Body. And so, the murder mystery begins. There are lots of twists in this movie, including three versions of the ending. However, the nuances that the characters manage to get themselves into are very funny, including the way that they weasel out of tough situations.
9. Scream - Sorry, I couldn't help myself. This movie was originally intended to be a parody on all horror movies, and I really saw it as such. No, it was not a horror movie just because there was a little blood in it. Unfortunately, since Scream was turned into a triology (which means added stiffness, corpses, and blood), everyone seemed to have forgotten so many light-hearted moments and jokes which made the first Scream such a funny movie that's perfect for just sitting around and watching with your friends.
8. The Heathers - While we're on the subject of great comedy flicks staring a bunch of high school kids, it would be a sin not to mention this movie. In my book, it's practically a cult classic, the predecessor to movies like Jawbreaker, Clueless and the like. This "teenage suicide" movie is sort of a dark comedy, which I'm sure some would even find offensive. Well, with main characters played by Christian Slater, Winona Rider and Shannon Doherty, this movie certainly deserves to be on my top ten. This is probably the best and funniest movie I've ever seen dealing with teen popularity contests which have become some bland these days in movies like She's All That.
7. Ferris Bueller's Day Off - Another 80's classic. How can you talk about comedies, teens and 80's and not arrive at this movie? This one is based on a kid cutting school, and takes place in one single day. It's full of very funny scenerios, and just those really entertaining situations. Matthew Brodrick gives an excellent performance here, and this is surely one of those movies that you can watch over and over again, getting laughs every time.
6. The Wedding Singer - Ah, now we go from 80's comedies to a 90's comedy taking place in the 80's. (I bet you're going, "huh?".) Well, Adam Sandler makes the cutest couple with Drew Barrymore as this is a sweet romantic comedy - which, mind you, has no effect on the humor in this film. I have seen this movie tons of times and it always cracks me up! Accompanied by a great soundtrack of 80's hits which fit right in with the movie, if you still haven't seen this one, go rent it now!!
5. The Birdcage - Ok, now we have a slight turn in my comedy picks. This is a great comedy about two homosexual men (Robin Williams and Nathan Lane) who's 20 year old son is getting married, and they have to meet the bride's highly conservative parents. I think that despite my brief description of the plot, the movie is really not offensive in any way, but is in fact very lighthearted, and has tons of laughs. I enjoy watching this movie every time, and seeing how the plot unfolds, along with the laughs.
4. Robin Hood: Men in Tights - What can I say, I just couldn't make this list without including this one!! Mel Brooks did it again with this one... parodies on so many things, from movies like "White Men Can't Jump" to circumsicion. You might say this is somewhat of a "lowbrow" movie, but I just love watching this one over and over again and cracking up every time. Deffinately a great twist on the original Robin Hood.
3. Happy Gilmore - Adam Sandler again. This is the one he did right before The Wedding Singer. In this one, he plays a hockey player who becomes a golfer. The sarcasm and cynicism Sandler brings to the character is great! This is definately one of my favorite comedies, and I recommend it to anyone who likes Adam Sandler movies in general or just a movie that you watch for laughs, where you really dont need to think much. :)
2. As Good As It Gets - A steep turn from my other comedy picks, some might say that this is not totally a comedy. Well, it's not, but I definately take it as one because of the situations the characters involve themselves in and all the great laughs that come along with that. With a great cast (Helen Hunt, Greg Kinear and Jack Nicholson), this movie has a romantic story, with slightly unusual characteristics. It's full of laughs and one I strongly recommend for anyone who's looking for more than just a thoughtless movie. This one is one of the classics.
and my favorite comedy of all time is...
1. Analyze This - Billy Crystal and Robert DeNiro are the perfect duo in this movie. DeNiro plays gangster that seeks psychological help from a shrink, Billy Crystal. This is one of those MUST-SEE movies because of the cast, if for nothing else. Everything about this movie is excellent, and it's full of laughs. Some parts in this one are just outright hilarious, no doubt, and the movie itself is really one of a kind. I strongly recommend this one to anyone with a sense of humor!!
-------------------------------------------------------------
Of course there are so many other movies out there which are hilarious, but I had to limit myself to only ten. Two movies which I feel I should've mentioned (because they really do belong up there somewhere)are Adams Family Values and Something About Mary.
Well folks, there you have it. These are my favorites. Any questions? Feel free to leave a comment. :)
