NOSFERATU - DVD
With it's haunting musical score and nightmarish images, this film remains the single
most atmospheric vampire film ever made. Adapted from Bram Stoker's DRACULA
novel, this film was ordered destroyed by court order when Stoker's widow sued the
producer's.
Thankfully, some prints survived, and a 35mm print was digitally remastered and
released by Image Entertainment on DVD. The word 'masterpiece' is often overused
in the film world, but this 1922 thriller, stylishly directed by the legendary F.W.
Murnau is a true masterpiece.
Rather than going with Stoker's description of the Count as an aging dignitary,
Murnau and actor Max Schreck give the vampire count a frightening rat like
appearance. When Nosferatu (Count Orlok) rises from his decaying coffin, I
guarantee a chill will run up your spine.
Regardless of whether or not you are an aficionado of silent films, this movie
delivers the goods. Vastly superior to the 1979 remake starring Klaus Kinski, horror
fans owe it to themselves to check this one out.
The DVD also features an extensive optional audio track delivering insightive
commentary on the film as well as a collection of supplementary material.
Highest Possible recommendation.
