Known Issues in the WYSIWYG Editor
There are a lot of fixes for the WYSIWYG Editor coming out in the October 6th release. We'll use this post to share what issues are still open and any new ones that are reported and reproduced by us.
Issue(s):
Extra paragraph tags in the Pros, Cons, Bottom line

Well...
I still think they should send the WYSIWYG (sic) editor to the same place they sent "New Coke" a few years ago. I know some of the young software pilots at Epinions Central HQ don't know what that means or the incident that surrounds it, but some of us old gray ghosts sure do. Be nice seeing if the "On/Off Toggle" switch actually works, or if the procedure will involve bugs as bad as the "new improved" editor.

well said
I'm a little gray, my son thinks I'm old but I don't think I'm a ghost yet.
I agree, Ed, I really dislike the editor. |

.
I still suggest an option for seasoned users to use it like it was before. |

Have you tried using the toggle off link?
I'm sorry to hear that you lost your review and would interested in hearing how it happened.

RE: Known Issues in the WYSIWYG Editor
I just posted my first review here since late August. Was I a little phobic about using the new editor? Yes.
But, I figured with the new version being released and all I should give it a shot. To make it all the easier, I used the on-line editor rather than writing in Word and then pasting it in.
The Verdict?
Unfrigginusable! Even after updating it several times I still get unwanted spacing between paragraphs. To add insult to injury even after the first couple of ratings came in, it remains as Unpublished Content on my profile page!
WYSIWYG text editing isn't exactly cutting edge technology. What the hell is going on here?

Rather than paying Microsoft, Corel, or another company a pretty penny to use a proprietary executable for converting plain text to HTML (thereby reducing monies available for income share and other member benefits), Epinions incorporated an Open Source executable to perform the operation. I believe that the executable is called TinyMCE. As the code is Open Source, it has limited support (only from user forums, for the most part, and [I presume] from badly-written [no doubt about that, since it's written by programmers] documentation). The same code is used by many other websites, among them v|3wp0|nts and wordpress.com.
Implementation of this product has been less than seamless, as one might expect of Open Source code. Each update has brought us closer to the idiot-proof version that one might expect of a commercial product, but there are still some problems. Some of those are PEBKAS and ID-ten-T, some are bugs and implementation problems.

Thanks Rex. Reminds of of that old saying "There's never enough time and money to do it right, but there's always enough time and money to do over again"
Just how many "pretty pennies" are we talking about? Surely someone in Brisbane has a Visa or MasterCard.
I write for one of those sites and they seem to do it perfectly. OMG, they're powered by shopping.com! I don't suppose anyone thought about approaching them for their code in return for a credit, do you? I mean sure, it violates the old NIH policy but still.

Quote: rudixeno Just how many "pretty pennies" are we talking about? Surely someone in Brisbane has a Visa or MasterCard. Quite a few, I would imagine. Enterprise software is priced well above the amount that mere mortals are charged, plus there's annual maintenance that usually runs about 20% of the purchase price.

The rest of the site is powered by ComEd [an inside joke for Chicagoans].

AHGs in Pros, Cons, Bottom Line
I thought the release was going to get rid of the < p > breaks, but I have noticed that I still need to take them out of the Pros/Cons/Bottom Line sections, depending on which one the editor decides to place them in. While not a huge deal, these gaps are annoying to look at (and they make my draft reviews list longer).
In my case, these are happening on reviews written into the WYSIWYG editor on Explorer.
Is this on the slate for the end of year fix?

Another Problem
It might be just a problem with the tags in general, but I also wanted to add that the Bold Tags are not working properly, either, at least at the time of my last review. The system continues to tell me I have openings without closings and vice versa, and I've gone back and quadruple checked.
Thanks for your help, hope you get the kinks worked out real soon,

That's still happening to me too, Grace. My own annoying perfectionistic tendencies kick into high gear when there are spaces I didn't add. I'm trying to take a very Zen attitude until it's fixed...... :D

RE: Known Issues in the WYSIWYG Editor
The Toggle Off appears to take the editor back to the older configuration as far as I have tested it but based on the input of others there seem to be issues remaining. My last review turned into a real mess as I had to re-type it three times, each time becoming a bit less robust so I'm going to wait until some of the fire dies down before I give it another try. I want to start by cleaning up a review which I think could be a lot better than it is. It suffered as I tried to maintain good content while fighting the urge to scream profanities in all caps. Fortunately, good taste won out in the end. |

RE: Known Issues in the WYSIWYG Editor
A salute to SMRAK for one of the first efforts to create a workaround for a crazy problem.
I want to mention those brave Epinionators, who passed their agonies, experiences and observations around to the rest of us; when it seemed that nobody at HQ was paying attention.
As for the current status of WYSIWYG, I banged out "CARMEX" without regard for the fixes. Fixes that never should have been needed in the first place. The first fix should have been the On/Off Toggle.
"New Coke", indeed. This P.R. Goof never had such dignity!
I won't be repairing anything; rather, my reviews (including "Spaced Out") proudly bear the battle wounds where the PUBLIC can see them.
