It's still there (and churning out some pretty good hits lately after dropping off after the initial upgrades), it's just missing from the MPA/MPR tables.

I'm gonna guess that the answer is "we're working on it" :)

In the meantime, it doesn't hurt to write there, you're still going to earn IS and the hits will eventually be counted.

I didn't really give an actual answer before...so I'm wondering if there's any official word from Eps when we'll see Sports & Outdoors (and I guess Health & Beauty) back into the rankings?

I think GG said a few weeks back that it was going to be a tougher fix than initially anticipated and they were going to have to do an actual release to fix it (at least Health & Beauty).

That's probably the same for Sports & Outdoors then since we've got the same problem you guys do - the category disappeared from the rankings.

dunno . . . GG probably won't promise you a date. He knows better than stick his head out and then not see it happen.

No, but I do want to stress that any rumour you hear today must be true ;-)

Example of outside hits dropoff

As most people realize the number of outside visits on many Sports/Outdoors has plummeted. Here's an example of a softball glove review I did (# of outside hits):
March 2005: 60
March 2006: 73
March 2007: 88
March 2008: 6

That's a good 90% dropoff in visits in a same month comparison. But I guess they are ''working on it''. -Dave

How much of that dropoff do you think is due to the fact that the review is several years old?

I could show you the same example with a large number of my outdoor gear reviews that all follow the same pattern. It's not a seasonable drop-off or anything like that, it's that they've been basically turned off.

Interesting...

So where have the readers gone? Is there another place where they can get these same type reviews? If so, what are they doing that we are not?

The readers are still here - it's that the reviews aren't registering the hits.

I have a blog where I post snipets of my reviews and then link to the entire review here on Epinions. With the tracking info on the blog I can see when people click off the blog to the Epinions review. This happens all the time to these reviews that are showing no hits so I know there is traffic, it's just not being counted.

The same thing is happening on outdoor gear (well any review with the /review/ bug) with regards to member hits. It registers member hits for about two days and then just stops. I have reviews with 10 to 20 more rates on them than it shows for member hits and that's days if not weeks after the review was up.

I think the traffic is still here, I just don't think it's being counted correctly. I think if the traffic had disappeared, you'd see a lot quicker action from Epinions because traffic is obviously their lifeblood. Just counting the hits correctly is more important to us, but less important in the business model I suppose.

What Jeff said. The same pattern exists for other products in the category.

Examples of Outside Hits/Member Hits Not Being Counted

I took this from another thread, but it is just another example that illustrates the problems with hit counting.

I think these issues with the hit counting have been only made worse since the introduction of the /review/ bug.

Quote: three_ster
July 3, 2006. That is the day that I posted a review, which now has 97 member rates. It was when Scrubbing Bubbles first came out, and was very VERY popular for a short while. Almost immediately I noticed a problem, and e-mailed Epinions about there being more rates than hits counted. Seems pretty straight-forward, and I explained the problem thoroughly to 3 different people. I was told it would be fixed, it would be looked in to, and then the responses stopped. Three e-mails were sent after the last response, and still nothing has been done, and it seems I am being ignored now.

Hits are missing, and it is pretty darn obvious. 2 years later, I still have more ratings than credited member hits, and I feel like I was given a complete run-around. There have been problems for a couple of years when it comes to counting hits, and I have noticed it time and again.
