Missing Categories? Migration/Update/New Search Issues

I'm just going to copy and paste what I posted over on the main board to start the discussion here...

I noticed with the updates that if I look at my reviews off my profile page (when you look at all of them), the category listing for many of my reviews is missing - there's simply nothing there, it's blank. However, when you click on the review, it still appears to be in the correct category if you look at the drill down info at the top of the review and if you look at the rates from advsiors in such in the correct category.

I checked a few with the new search and it appears there are new listings for some of these - should these all be moved or will the category come back eventually and we can leave them be?

Also, I noticed that in addition to missing a category on some of them, some of the ones that are missing a category are also missing the "Opinion On" follow-up - that is, there's no topic that the review is on - and I haven't been able to access some of those reviews (I'm in the process of filing reports on those). I'm guessing those got lost in translation somewhere and just have to be moved to correct topics eventually.

Also...it's my understanding that in order to fit the shopping.com info - new categories had to be created. For example for about 90% of my Outdoor Gear reviews have become "Sport and Outdoor" topics. I'm guessing that
folks' 'sphere's of influence' will be expanded/modified to fit the new categories since at the moment there appears to be no advisors or TRs (or leads) in those categories.

Jeff

I think I'll go and get another cup of coffee :)

RE: Migration/Update/New Search Issues

I've found a couple more category-less and topic-less reviews...it seems it's my more esoteric reviews on some pretty obscure outdoor gear. I'm guessing there just wasn't any place to put it.

I have a review of a piece of musical equipment -- it's actually a portable sound system -- that has neither a category nor a topic listed. I checked and there is a correct category, but I can't even open the review to move it to the correct listing. I do have a version of this review saved and will re-post it if it doesn't pop out of the woodwork in the next few days. It's a popular review with good earnings, so I want to be sure people can find it.

As for my de-categorized reviews, they are mostly in Cars and H&G.

I've got a couple of Outdoor Gear reviews like that and I went ahead and filed bug reports on those. On all but one there is a 'correct topic' but I can't get into the review to move it. The other one doesn't have a topic to move it into.

Jeff - would you mind changing the title of your initial post to "Missing Categories"? That seems to be what we're discussing in this thread right now, and seems to be the one major issue that's been mentioned so far in the general board. If you could change the title, it would be easier for others to find this particular discussion.

Thanks,

Andrew

Houston - We Have a Problem!

This seems more than a tiny bug when many of us have plenty reviews that all of a sudden disappeared from Epi search, I think even these items are not found in search today.

Something went belly up with a recent fix up and I'm sure it's been worked on as I'm writing this?

I know I lost catogory for my beer reviews, my pet food reviews, my beauty reviews and even my cooking tips are now homeless :-(

RE: Missing Categories

Missing categories: Yup I've got them. I haven't gone through all my reviews but Beauty and H&G seem to be heavily affected. Many of my LUSH products, for example. I took a quick look at one and it has actually moved over to Wellness/Personal Care.

And my biggest money maker is category-less right now, too. That's very depressesing.

I noticed that the site was down longer than planned yesterday so I'm hoping that they continue to work on these issues.

I'm hoping once GG gets in that at least he gives us some guidance. I'm not motivated to write until I know what's going on.

The staff is well aware of the bugs and needs our reports to help fix any problems - just make sure to submit a report to Epinions for any issues you are finding :)

Actually, I don't know if the Beauty issue is a bug or not. What I discovered is that a lot of Beauty products are now categorized as "Personal Care" and that is a "Wellness" category (where I'm not hatted).

Before I start submitting bug reports which could be an all-day project, I think an update from Brisbane on what is happening on the site is still in order.

RE: Missing Categories

Sigh, I now have a total of 58 reviews that list no category. Many of these were from the Pet fiasco, but now I have new ones in Musical Instruments, Beauty, Outdoor Gear, Gifts and even a couple Movies.

So far I filed one bug report on a guitar review that seems to have disappeared altogether, I hope it can be found, I don't have a copy on my computer. I guess I will be submitting a lot of bug reports on the decategorized reviews.

You can search with Google to find your reviews, even the ones that are "lost" at the moment. Go to Google (or Yahoo) and type the following:

[whatever it is] reviews site:epinions.com

For example, you might search for:

2005 VW Jetta reviews site:epinions.com

Google will find the URL to the review. Unfortunately, this URL will not work any better than the link on your profile page but it will allow you to report the problem -- you now have a URL to put into the bug report. Even better, if you click on the "Cached" link in the Google results, it will call up your review from some cache server. I just did this for my missing review.

If you do not have your reviews saved elsewhere, you can uses this "cache" technique to recover and save your reviews. Good luck!

RE: yikes!

And now I know an excellent reason to put the name of the product into title of a review: I have at least 10 reviews that have no categories and no listings, and I can't tell exactly what some of them are from their titles. At this point, I don't know what to search for with Google or Yahoo.

An update from Andyman on the General board:
Quote: Andyman

This is not a permanent situation but the fix is going to take some time. Here's the issue. It's technical but let me see if I can explain it in a non-technical way.

1) We're now using Shopping.com's search engine
2) One of its features is that it chooses the most relevant results to show you at the top based on what people have clicked in the past
3) Since Shopping.com's site does not have some of our categories, like Travel, they have not yet had a chance to get any clicks
4) So they'll appear lower for a while until they develop some clicks
5) It might seem like they'll never get clicks this way but eventually the SE has a way of balancing things out

To find "Chicago:"

1) Enter "Chicago" in search, submit
2) On the results page, at left, click "More" under "Category"
3) Scroll down to "destinations" and click it

As people use the new search it will learn and things will eventually self-correct.

We've actually got some coding left to do on this piece so it will take a bit longer.

In the meantime our pages are still available to outside web search engines, which will continue routing hits your way.

No problem - I updated the title but it doesn't seem to be updating the overall thread title for some reason.

Thanks for trying - I wasn't sure if it would update or not.

FYI - Andyman's posted some specific information in chelledun's original "New Search Engine" topic on the General board, so be sure to check that out.

RE: Missing Categories? Migration/Update/New Search Issues

out of curiosity... I posted all the links for my reviews that were missing a category in a bug report. There were about 10 links in one report.
Did I just screw up by NOT posting them all individually?

god I hope not...

RE: Missing Categories? Migration/Update/New Search Issues

I have 74 uncategorized reviews. I reported one in each 'category' but I don't really want to report every single one of them. Do I have to?

Folks, I'm asking everyone to use the bug forms to report their bugs. You are welcome to use "other" if none of the more specific forms suit you. I am discussing the new release over in chelledun's thread, so join us there if you'd like to ask a question or have something explained.

No one wants to link to their review on the boards, due to fears of "pimping" allegations, but when reporting a bug we really, really need the specifics. The URL. The product. Etc. That's why Andrew and I are discouraging the reporting of bugs here. Use the forms instead. They all come to me.

Feel free to discuss bugs with each other here. I may concentrate my efforts on chelledun's thread, though.

Okay I really really really don't mean to come across as a cranky member today, so please forgive.

But where is chelledun's thread? I started on the Main Board, where GG directed I thought in a thread to this board, then I clicked here, and found this isn't the place to ask my question either?

So *just in case* I'm going to post my question here, as time is limited tonight .....

Am I being asked to File BUG REPORTS for each review I have that now does NOT have a Category listed next to it? (please say no, it would take weeks and be maddening, tons of mine are missing and I have 700 reviews) ...
