The three W's: Whiskey, Women, and Wine...

Aug 09 '00

If you're looking to write a cool song that people can relate to, just write about the important things in life: Whiskey, Women, and Wine... you know what they say - "write about what you know best" - in my case, I just happen to know a great deal about the three W's, and have used this knowledge to write a slew of great songs. I've got Whiskey & Leather, Whiskey Woman, and Whiskey Sour - (the "Whiskey trilogy"), and scores of tunes about the fairer sex including- Ace Diamond Bimbo, Highschool Baby, and my latest hit She Was a Sleazoid. Okay, I actually write more songs about beer than I do wine, but beer doesn't start with the letter "W", now does it??? Then again, I did write the "hit" Fine Wine, Cheap Women which covers two of the three...

I always write songs by coming up with the music first, usually just by jamming my guitar. I mumble non-words that sound good with the music, and then translate these mumbles into actual words that make a good chorus. Once I have a cool chorus with a good theme (usually one of the three W's), I then proceed to actually write a couple o' verses that rhyme and sometimes even make sense! I hear this is how Mick Jagger and Keith Richards used to write songs - Keith would play the riffs on his axe and mumble something that sounded good with the music, then Mick would translate the mumbles into actual lyrics. Hey, if it's good enough for the Stones, it's good enough for me!

Other people will say that you have to suffer to be a decent songwriter, that you must pull inspiration from your inner demons to write a masterpiece.... I've been there, done that, and usually those are the songs that years later I read the "deep, emotional" lyrics and say "WHAT A BUNCH OF GARBAGE!" Nowadays, I like to write about having fun - good times, parties, chicks, and space aliens... hey, if it's good enough for Bowie it's good enough for me!

Adding a couple of "whoa-whoas" to your songs can make some great crowd pleaser sing-a-longs... people love a good "whoa-whoa", just don't over do it. Yes, saying "baby" is still cool, unless you play heavy metal, and remember one thing above everything else: the lyrics don't have to make sense, they just have to SOUND GOOD WITH THE MUSIC! But of course, if the music is lame, even great lyrics won't save the song...

I will leave you with a line from my rock anthem classic, Whiskey sour...

I get my power - from Whiskey Sour
My favorite drink - got my head in the sink!

Now go rock...!
