Remember Fondue?
Feb 07 '00
If you are between forty and sixty years old, you probably remember Fondue. It was a fad in the late 1960's to early seventies. We even have a restaurant in Houston, TX called The Melting Pot that is a fondue eatery. We had some friends take us to dinner one night, they wanted to try The Melting Pot. We liked the food, but thought the price was too high.
Just before Christmas this year, we found a fondue pot in a discount store and my hubby asked if I would like one for Christmas. We looked at other things as well, but the fondue pot ended up under the Christmas tree.
We like to keep velveeta cheese and a bag of chips around for parties and drop in guests. My ten year old son likes cooking with the fondue pot using the skewers and mini corn dogs. We have cooked everything from raw round steak, to sausage, to chicken fried steak, french fries to chicken in the pot with favorable results. Cooking with oil is fattening, but the overall taste and tenderness is much better than with broth.
This is a fast way to cook, but overall the dinner may take longer.
The one we bought came with eight skewers and a ring to set the skewers in.
There was a book as well with recipes for various sauces to dip your food in before and after cooking. I haven't looked yet, but I'm sure there are a number of recipes on the Internet for fondue as well.
If you're looking for something different for dinner, fondue is a lot of family fun. Happy cooking!
