My only interest in Netflix.com stemmed from the fact that they ARE the ONLY site on the Net, who carry the genre of movies I am vociferously interested in - the INDIAN.
Not that I am not interested in other genres but in the USA, my adopted country of residence, far from the land I grew up in, fed off the musical potboilers of Bollywood(notice the takeoff?), they fill an important void. These are movies, where even an action flick has to have eight songs filmed in exotic foreign locales never mind the fact that the story itself is about an orphaned urchin growing up in some mean street of Mumbai. But once an addict, always one!
Prior to Netflix.com, the only other source of these movies was the local Indian store, run by the immigrant Patel family, who would without shame or remorse pirate from the imported PAL VHS originals, sourced either from Dubai or India. I wonder how much loss the Indian film industry incurs because of such rampant daylight thuggery.
In any case once I discovered Netflix.com, my lazy bones did a double fillip of joy, for I could order movies firmly ensconced in the comfort of my seat and return the same at my pace, without having to worry about the subtle taunts of the Patel daughter or rude comments of the Patel son. Add to this the brilliant quality of DVD prints compared to the erstwhile 8th generation copy of the lossy, granular VHS tape there was no turning back!!!??
The only complaint I have of Netflix.com is that they do not have sufficient number of copies of the movies that they stock. For more often than not that nasty 'Out of Stock' legend is shown against movies I especially would like to rent. Also in recent times they seem to be in the habit of jacking up their prices, no doubt encouraged by the increasing membership and popularity. But hey so long as I get what I want out of the site, full power to consumers like me that is, I will continue to patronise them.
Now if only they would hire me as a consultant to their site, I could recommend a million ways to increased and assured memberships. Sigh.....that will have to wait I guess, but in the meanwhile thank you for at least recognising the fact that with around 2 million families of Indian origin in the USA, there is a serious market worth tapping into and for providing the convenience to.
Two thumbs up I would say!!
