| cdanuloff's Full Review: Sony SAS A50D Satellite TV System |
I recently purchased this reciever as an upgrade from my Sony SAT-A4, and have also owned the Hughes Platinum and the first Sony 'A' model (I forget exact number). This is a big improvement over the A4 and earlier Sony models for the following reasons:
1) Much faster speed in change channels and in Guide
2) New display layout for Guide and Favorites lets you see full picture while you choose channels - great improvement.
3) New Favorites setup is much better to use and faster than before
4) Included RF antenna lets you use your remote from anywhere in the room (or in the house for that matter) without pointing directly at the box.
5) Actual logos for all channels appear in guide in full color, making it easier to quickly recognize channels.
6) Remote now includes master volume control for SONY AV components, so if you use a SONY reciever for surround sound, you don't need to constantly grab for second remote.
7) Picture and sound are excellent, but I've never had any issues with that on any DirecTV reciever.
Only thing I would 'warn' about, is that if you use the RF antenna so you can use the remote without pointing directly at the box, any other remotes in your house will change the channel on the A50 too. So if you have a second set and reciever in your bedroom or whereever, using that remote will un-intentionally change the channel on the A50. I don't know how they could fix this, but it is annoying.
Also note that the Serial interface is not compatible with TIVO until you have SONY mail you a replacement version of this same model. Otherwise, excellent DirecTV reciever.
