Not quite the durability

Jan 03 '00

My Sony 53"XBR35 big screen television and the latest failure of what should be a top of the line electronic chassis. I bought my Sony 53"
XBR big screen television after extensive research committing to lots of
saved money. I visited different sites including Sony Headquarters on Madison Ave in N.Y.C. Everything I heard was so positive. The XBR family was supposedly to closes to DVD technology. I was even told that the XBR family brand is the only manufactured Sony brand actually assembled in Japan. Because of prestige reasons and because of their commitment to their product. Every other brand?? Well, from what I hear it's assembled in Malaysia. Labor is much cheaper out there. Well, after spending my life savings my set lasted five (5) years. Wow, a whole five years. My wallet is all of the sudden aching again. I felt this whole worry when I initially made my purchase. Like, what the hell am I doing spending all this money. I even bragged to my friends afterwards. Hey, the set is great. Great picture and sound. But the life expectancy just killed me. I would of forgotten about some of the extra bells and whistles I paid for in lieu of longevity. I've spent $3645.00 with extended warranty. The minute my warranty expired; guess what? Yes! It died! My picture became arched. I hear it's some kind of pin cushion problem. I really did love my set. Especially for home theatre use. I miss it. I am very surprised on its' longevity. Five years? For over three thousand dollars. Ouch! My family and friends are having the last laugh. They've spent half that amount of money or even less for a set still intact today. You know? Their picture isn't that bad after all. It's definitely making me think of other brands out there. I have so many butterflies in my stomach. Especially after spending thousands of additional dollars on.....you ready? A Sony laser player MDP-550, A Sony VCR 798, A Sony home theatre speaker system SAVA-55, Two (2) Sony DVD players (1)DVP-S3000 and (1)DVD-530D, A Sony STR-DE915 Home theatre amplifier receiver with built in Dolby decoder, (2) Sony Stereo systems and just recently for Christmas a Wega 32" television. I'm hoping I can digest my food in years to come.
