| poopeebum's Full Review: Sony Ericsson T200 GSM Cellular Phone |
The Sony Ericsson T200 is a great cell phone to have. Not only is it packed with features, but it is also very portable, and wont cost you too much. I bought this phone for $200 Canadian with Fido, which is around $125US in September 2002 when it first came out in North America. You can probably get the phone for cheaper now in the U.S. This is a great phone for the price.
This phone is only slightly smaller than the Nokia 3360 and 3390 series phones. But it is a bit bigger than the nokia 8390 and 8360 series phones. This phone comes with a 3.7V 700mAH battery. This phone is available in Black/Silver and Baby Blue/Silver. It doesnt look like you can customize the faceplates.
FEATURES:
The main feature that impressed me the most was the T200 is a world phone. You can use this phone anywhere in the world that has a GSM Network. It runs on GSM 1900Mhz, 1800Mhz, and 900Mhz. In North & South America, Europe, Asia, and Africa and Oceania. If you plan to travel alot and dont want to spend alot of money on a World phone the Sony Ericsson T200 is the best one out there.
This phone also has GPRS support, which will allow high speed internet access for laptops & mobile devices. Also built into the phone is a mobile WAP internet browser to browse WAP enabled websites on the internet. The WAP browser is activated by pressing the blue button and is quick and easy to use. This phone has a unique blue backlight unlike most phones that have a green backlight. The screen is clear & easy to read. The backlit LCD screen shows 4 shades of grayscale.
I was amazed on how good the reception was on this phone, being an internal antenna phone, I didnt think this phone would have good clairity when connected, but this phone is really clear, even when its on 2 bars out of 5 reception.
This phone has many of the standard features that most phones today have and more. The T200 has Vibrate ringer, Phone Security, SIM Card Security, T9 Tegic Input, 8 Downloadable ringtones, 10 Programmable Ringtones, Background Wallpaper customizability, Downloadable Pictures, a Calendar and To Do list, Stopwatch timer, Calculator, and 5 Games! As you can see this phone is multimedia friendly. It supports the new Multi-media messaging which will allow you to attach pictures to SMS messages that you send. This phone even supports the new digital camera attachment that works with the new color T300 phone, as well as the upcoming MP3 music player addon.
DISADVANTAGES:
After using this phone for several months now, I have noticed some drawbacks and annoyances. The battery life on this phone is significantly less than on my previous phone (Sanyo SCP-4500) The Battery on the T200 only lasts for 3-4 days, I usuallly use my phone about once or twice a day, more on weekends. On my old Sanyo SCP-4500 I would only need to charge the phone once every week!. The battery life as described on the box is: 360 minutes of talk time, and 180 hours of standby time. But from my experience it it much less.
I don't like the menu system on the T200, my friends have tried to get into the main menu, or tried to call someone on my phone only to end up deleting some contacts from my phone book. I have somewhat gotten used to the menu system now that I've used it for a while now.
You cannot save multiple phone numbers in the same contact name. For example if your friend has a House number and a Cell number, you cannot save both numbers under 1 name. You have to create two seperate enties. I find this annoying because not only does it waste space on your phone book and SIM card, but it also takes longer to look for your contacts. I would think this feature would be standard on all new phones now. The lack of this feature turned me away from Nokia phones at first.
I have dropped this phone from a table only once, and the phone has suffered tiny dents and chips. This phone seems more fragile than others. If you drop this phone too many times it will probably show. Unlike Nokia's where you can just get a new faceplate, the Ericsson T200 doesnt have changable faceplates.
CONCLUSION:
Overall I think Sony Ericcson has done a good job in making World Phones more affordable. It is loaded with mulit-media features and options.
