| naphtalia's Full Review: Compaq Presario 1278 |
My friend Ilana's sister arrived last week from New York for a short visit. She had one suitcase of clothes and things she will need for her stay here in Israel. The other suitcase was full of things for Ilana including New York bagels, all the Times crossword puzzles for the last two months, and a Compaq Presario 1278 Laptop Computer. Ilana wouldn't let me near her bagels (*pout*), but she did let me take her computer for a "test-drive." I have to tell you, I am thoroughly impressed!
Compaq did a great job loading up this machine. It is a 433Mhz machine with 64M of RAM, a 24X CD ROM drive and a 56K modem. The only thing that is missing here is a DVD, which my Toshiba Satellite computer has (Hey Ilana, neener! neener! neener!) The monitor colors on the Compaq are just gorgeous! This is not a new computer, but it sure feels like a new one. Many of the students in my university program have newer machines that they brought along to Israel, and this Compaq compares favorably to almost all of them.
The batteries on this machine seem to go for about 3-4 hours of regular use, but since most of the time we're able to plug-in, it's okay.
Before Ilana got this computer, her computer-geek uncle had loaded it with all the basic software that she needs - Windows 2000 and MS Office and Internet Explorer. Everything extraneous has been stripped off (no games, no Turbo Tax, no icq, no mIRC, etc. Ilana will do those things from the computer lab computers.) Perhaps that is why this machine cooks as fast as it does. It's really a pleasure to work on.
If price is an issue, (and when isn't it?), and you're limited to a used computer, look for one of these Compaq Presarios. If this machine is any indication, I may suggest some people upgrade by getting an older machine.
Oh, and just so you know, if I get any Ibarra Chocolate from California, I'm not sharing it with Ilana.
