| bonniesayers's Full Review: Honeywell Duracraft Twin Window Fan DW627 |
Last summer I received two window fans to help control the heat inside my house since the landlord pays the utilities and air conditioning is not allowed. I have no idea why I never considered window fans prior to last year, but glad that I now have three of them providing relief from the hot Southern California sun and dry air.
The Honeywell Duracraft® Twin Window Fan DW627 is the smallest at just ten inches tall, providing more viewable space for your window. This was good when I had it in my kitchen but now that it is located in my bedroom window I would rather have a larger sized fan to block out the neighbor’s house, dog and outside light.
There are only two options on the Honeywell Duracraft® Twin Window Fan DW627 for speed of the fans. They are not separately controlled either, so just the basic high and low are available. The middle of the fan has the lever with off at the top and low at the bottom. Since the weather has shifted this past week with foggy mornings I have moved the lever to low sometime in the middle of the night. This is the easy part having to just lift your arm and flip down the lever that it can be done half asleep!
Last summer when utilizing the Honeywell Duracraft® Twin Window Fan DW627 in the kitchen window I was able to plug it in to the wall outlet close by. For the past several months this has now been in my bedroom where I decided to use an extension cord since my children are in there and the plug was too tight and posed a risk. The plug is in the middle of the fan and too close to my bed so I move it to the right and slide it under the bracket. The plug is polarized and can only fit one way into a 120V outlet.
The Honeywell Duracraft® Twin Window Fan DW627 should not be plugged in when not in use. This has not been the case thus far here, but I would simply unplug the fan from the extension cord. The fan is to be placed on dry surfaces only and cannot be mounted on a wall or ceiling. Since this is a window fan when it is raining the fan should be removed from the window. It is recommended to store in plastic or back in the box when in storage.
The person who gave me this tossed out the boxes so I placed the Honeywell Duracraft® Twin Window Fan DW627 down on top of newspaper in an overhead closet that kept it clean and dust-free. The fan is easy to install in the window since it is one piece and all you need to do is open the window to at least eleven inches high and position the Honeywell Duracraft® Twin Window Fan DW627 into the window sill. There are two window guides on top of the fan that need to make contact with the window.
At first it was hard to figure out which side of the Honeywell Duracraft® Twin Window Fan DW627 was to bring in fresh air. This is because the lever is also on the other side to utilize removing the stale air. The way to tell the difference is that Duracraft® is written on the front side to the right. The back side has the model number tag on it as well as on the bottom of the unit. It is so much easier for me to use the fan in the kitchen since there are no blinds there.
The process gets tricky when you need two hands to slide up the window, hold the fan and get the blinds out of the way and make sure you keep the cord to the blinds and the fan on the inside. This should also be used when a screen is in place. I just removed the window fan to remind myself this process and noticed how dirty the screen is from having the Honeywell Duracraft® Twin Window Fan DW627 there this summer.
Since my other two window fans have the option with just the flip of a button or switch to move the flow of the air this one stays in the one position. Unfortunately the neighbor’s driveway is right there so he has been working on his car right outside the window bringing his exhaust right through our house. What I do then is turn the other fan to get rid of the air and then turn this one off, unplug it and bring the blind down all the way to block out the view.
If next summer season I find myself still stuck in this miserable living situation I am changing this fan with the Holmes® HAWF-2041 Twin Window Fan to make the options available easier to function. As all other window fans there are side panels that pull out to make this fit many sizes of windows. I have the right side half way out with the left side intact. For storing purposes it would be advised to place the side panels back into the compartment. When I move the fan from the window I need to readjust the panel a bit for a snug fit inside the window sill.
There is some hardware included with the Honeywell Duracraft® Twin Window Fan DW627 that I have not utilized as this is for casement or sliding windows. These are four shoulder screws and a mounting bracket. For cleaning purposes only a damp cloth can be used. This should not be placed in water or near flammable items. The warnings for this include to not move the window while the fan is running and not to lean on it or push it through to the other side, no matter how much your neighbor irritates you!
The Honeywell Duracraft® Twin Window Fan DW627 fits windows with minimum openings that are 21 7/8” x 12” and with casement windows that is 12” x 21 7/8”. My living room windows are sliding so they have no window fans in them as I have table fans in there. I prefer simple easy to use appliances so have not pursued the necessary steps needed for those windows. For a basic window fan this would be the one to get, especially if you just want to draw the fresh air in and not be bothered with pulling out the stale air.
This is safely secured in the window, done all by myself and very close to my bed where I can easily feel the cool air without bothering my sleep routine. It is fairly quiet and does not keep any of my children up either. There is a pretty big distinction between the high and low options too so you are covered all around with the cool air in comfort style.
Additional parts can be ordered through Honeywell at 1-800-554-4558 using a credit card any time day or night. There is also the option to speak to a technical representative during business hours according to the East Coast time zone. There is also a three-year limited warranty on the Honeywell Duracraft® Twin Window Fan DW627, but you have to mail it back postage paid with proof of purchase and ten dollars for handling, $13.50 for Canadian residents.
The Honeywell Duracraft® Twin Window Fan DW627 is a no-nonsense fan that has limited functions compared to other brands and models where you can adjust the temperature and control the sleeping levels. Depending on your needs and the location of the window wanting to be utilized, this can work out well for the price.
Although I live in Southern California I prefer to sleep in a colder climate at night than sweat and itch. There are two window fans, one ceiling fan, one table fan and one standing oscillating fan in the bedroom. It is comfortable around midnight when I retire with the crisp air filling the room at six in the morning making it easy to get out of bed and start the day.
