Dieting is an issue that frequently becomes a topic of discussion among the kids we volunteer with. Boys and girls are often obsessed with regard to weight issues. Unfortunately some of these young adults find appeal from availability of Diet Pills. As mentors we attempt to provide them with knowledge through resources they will understand.
One of the helpful aids in this battle is books, in particular Diet Pill Drug Dangers. This 64-page book offers the factual information they need, testimonial insertion from peers, and is worded in an easy to comprehend for those in 4th – 10th grades and/or ages 9-15.
I recommend this publication for those at risk of using diet pills. For preventative use I recommend presenting this to those in 6th grade and above (unless you feel environment or other clues warrant earlier reading).
The information is presented in a method that isn’t preachy or undermining. In my 10 years of volunteering with youth I have found that they are receptive to information presented in written format. After they have digested the reading material I inquire their opinion regarding the book read and how they feel the information is applicable to them. Through this entire process I am providing a listening ear. At no time do I show even a slight approval regarding the choice to take diet pills or other drug substance.
I appreciate books such as Diet Pill Drug Dangers because they plant factual knowledge seeds within a format that is acceptable to youth.
Diet Pill Drug Dangers
By: Lawrence Clayton, Ph.D.
Within the 64 pages of this book information about how diet pills work, the affect they have on the user, and precisely why unsupervised use of them is dangerous is noted. Eyewitness accounts from people who have fought diet pill addictions are provided. Minor coverage regarding physician-supervised use of prescription diet pills is presented, allowing the reader to understand when use is – perhaps – okay. This all is put forth in a manner that pre-teens/teens are receptive of. Careful attention is applied toward refraining from sounding authoritarian. The facts are presented and healthy choices are encouraged.
This book offers notations, a recommended reading list, Internet addresses, and helpful charts. Most readers benefit from the graphs & the fact boxes presented, and the repeat viewing of these. Diet Pill Drug Dangers offers abundant information with regard to diet pill danger and abuse. All of the inclusive data is presented in format that maintains interest of the pre-teen/teen. I appreciate the straightforward knowledge that is included in this publication. The vivid portraits allow this book to present itself acceptably to youth, versus the sterile appearance some books take.
I feel this publication and other similar ones are excellent for homeroom classes, guidance counselor offices, and other applicable areas. The information is intended to educate youth but is well received by (most) adults too.
Final Thoughts
The use of diet pills and/or other drugs (illegal and legal) is a factual concern during the pre-teen and teen years. Too many times I have witnessed parents excuse the need to educate the youth within their home, thinking, “My child wouldn’t do that!” The ugly fact is that many do. However when armed with knowledge of the dangers, some make a purposeful choice to avoid them. For this reason we chose to educate our 11-year-old with regard to the dangers and myths of diet pills, illegal drugs, OTC and prescription drugs. It is my feeling that she is properly armed to make an educated choice. My hope is that she’ll avoid them, and I think she will. However, at least I know she realizes the horror involved with improper use.
If your approach is preventative education, I encourage you to consider publications such as this. I also encourage inclusion of books such as Diet Pill Drug Dangers with homerooms, and other classrooms. An educated individual has the power to say NO and mean it.
