I just got back from a nice vacation in Mackinaw, Michigan. While there, we had booked a room at the Clarion Hotel with a Jacuzzi on the first floor. When we came to check in, the hotel manager said there was a problem, the people before us had flooded the room. The manager offered to put us up in the Hampton down the road for the same price as the Clarion. We jumped on it, knowing that the Hampton is a rather expensive hotel.
We went to our new hotel, checked in and went to drop our bags off at our room. The room we got had a king size bed, Jacuzzi and lake front. The total price of this was $290(compared to the same room at Clarion, which was $116). We thought that since this is a much nicer hotel that we would get something extra that the Clarion did not have. We were disappointed to find out that our room had a Jacuzzi that was smaller (not by much) and that there was no microwave. Also, the furniture in the Hampton was lacking. There was no sofa and the desk was small. The room seemed to be overly empty. The bed was comfortable and offered a nice rest.
The view from the room was wonderful, much better than any hotel I had been to previously in Mackinaw City. From our hotel no docks or ferry lines could be seen unless we leaned out to the left or right. This offered an unobstructed view of the Straits of Mackinaw. My favorite part is to watch the light of the bon fires across the lakeshore. It is a very interesting sight.
The Hampton offers a pool that is relatively large but not deep. The deepest part is 5 feet, I believe. This is an added bonus to families going on vacation. They also have a whirlpool, but the water seemed to be discolored while I was there. They also offer a hot breakfast of sausage, eggs, donut holes, juice, bagels, and cereal. I must say that the staff was very friendly and assisted us with any questions we had.
In relation to the rest of Mackinaw City, the Hampton is located just far enough from the touristy shopping area to be comfortable. It is located right on US-23 along with most of the other hotels. It is fairly close to the main ferry lines, with Star Line being the closest. If you do happen to go to the Hampton, have dinner at the Lighthouse, just across the street. The food is wonderful!
