Pros: Decent speed, good buffer underrun protection
Cons: Wacky drivers cause problems with Win2k
The Bottom Line: Due to poor design this burner doesn't work under well under a multi-user environment in Windows 2000, something that most competing products do fine without a problem. Pass on it.

| mediageek's Full Review: TDK veloCD ReWriter 12/10/32 |
Most of the reviews here have done a good job of giving an overview of this CD burner, so I won't retread that territory. Instead, I want to call attention to a problem I encountered using this burner on a Windows 2000 system.
We bought this burner to use at a community organization that produces independent media. Our main audio workstation runs Windows 2000 because it's the most reliable and stable OS for audio and video production on a PC -- much more stable than Win 98 or ME. We also use Win2k because it's a multiple-user environment and the OS's security features help us prevent newbie users from accidentally trashing the system.
Unforunately the VeloCD burner was a poor choice for this application. This burner has strange drivers that require the user to be logged in with administrator privileges in order to burn a CD. This means that a basic user who doesn't have admin privileges (so s/he can't screw up the system) is prevented from burning a CD.
In a word, that is stupid.
So, this burner turned out to be useless for the purpose it was intended, and for no good reason except poor design and engineering. Any piece of hardware that won't let you use Windows 2000 is just clearly not good for anyone doing serious work--especially if you're doing audio or video work.
On top of that we were not pleased with the fact that we couldn't get Easy CD Creator to work with it, since many new users find it easier than the included Nero software.
Other than that big problem we are mostly happy with the reliability and speed of this burner when we can use it.
