Like many publishers, the Dummies folks wanted to cash in on the Dan Brown phenomena and chose a name to go along with that train of thought. But the title of a book is seldom the authors choice and Im sure such was the case with Templar Code for Dummies.
Christopher Hodapp, the author of Freemasons for Dummies and his co-author Alice von Kannon have produced an excellent book on the history of the Knights Templar and the role they played in the crusades that is as entertaining as it is informative. Hodapp and von Kannon not only cover the medieval aspect of the subject, but also delve into the various neo-Templar Orders that exist today including the Freemasons and the Sovereign Military Order of the Temple of Jerusalem (SMOTJ).
Along the way, the authors also spend a considerable amount of time discussing the rise of Islam and the various factors that led to the First Crusade, as well as busting some long-held myths about the Templars.
Like all Dummies books, Templar Code for Dummies follows the popular format, providing the reader with plenty of sidebars full of relevant information.
Do not be dissuaded by the Templar Code or Dummies components of the title, this book is a top notch treatment of the subject that does not require a university degree to comprehend.
