| bradshawcl's Full Review: Claritin Children's, 24 Hour Allergy Relief, Great... |
My oldest has seasonal allergies, and she takes a prescription for it, but we happened to run out and there were no refills left on the prescription, so rather than dragging her to the doctor just to get a refill and let her catch every other illness in the world in the waiting room, I went to Wal-Mart and got a 4 oz. bottle of Claritin Childrens 24 Hour Relief in Great Grape flavor. It cost $9 and something. This is a liquid medicine, and it is suggested for ages 2-6.
The active ingredient is 5mg of loratadine, which is used as an antihistamine. The inactive ingredients are: Edetate Disodium, Flavor, Glycerin, Maltitol, Phosphoric Acid, Polyethylene Glycol, Sodium Benzoate, Sodium Phosphate Monobasic, Sorbitol, Sucralose, and Water. Each teaspoon full contains 6 mg of sodium. But, this liquid is dye free, sugar free, and alcohol free.
The uses of this liquid are for relieving runny nose, sneezing, itchy eyes, throat, and nose, and also watery eyes. My oldest has the symptoms of red eyes, sneezing, and an itchy throat. The throat itchiness usually causes a rather hacky cough as well.
The directions say for to use, fill the included dosage cup as follows:
For kids 6 years and up to adults- 2 teaspoons daily, do not take more than 2 teaspoons full in 24 hours.
For kids 2 to under 6 years old- 1 teaspoon daily, not to exceed more than 1 teaspoon full in 24 hours.
For consumers with liver or kidney disease consult a doctor. Do not use if you have ever had an allergic reaction to this product or its ingredients. Do not take more of this product than instructed, because it may cause drowsiness. Be sure to keep this and all other medications out of the reach of kids, even though it has a child proof cap, keep it out of reach of kids. Incase of accidental overdose, seek medical attention.
I do appreciate that the grape flavored liquid is clear and dye free rather than purple, because even when my kid is being careful, she can accidentally spill some on her clothes, and usually purple colored medicine does not wash out very well. As far as the taste, my kid says that it does not taste good, and to me, it does not have a very grape-ish smell to it. She is under six, so I give her one teaspoon full once a day.
As far as adverse effects, there were no reactions, or drowsiness associated with her taking this. I like the fact that this works for 24 hours, because I can give her this in the mornings before school, and not worry about it wearing off in the middle of the day. I find that this does work for the most part, but it will wear off a couple of hours before the next dose, but it will work about oh 22 hours Id say. It really keeps the sneezing, watery eyes, and itchy throat at bay.
But, it is rather expensive for the amount you get- and I did not notice a generic on the shelf either. But, it does work equally as well as the prescription she was using. This allergy season has not been all that rough, but there have been a few weeks where it has been bothersome, and this really does help and it is long lasting. The only cons are the taste and price, and other than that, no problems. I have seen coupons for this in the Sunday paper, so I would stock up if I found some coupons.
