Even Deeper # 8: bleedthrough Preview

Dec 09 '03

The Bottom Line A Preview of the next NIN album "bleedthrough" slated for a release in 2004.

Even Deeper # 8: bleedthrough

Well, it’s been months since I did the last edition of Even Deeper and apparently, not much happened. Johnny Cash died earlier this fall after scoring a monster hit with a cover of NIN’s “Hurt” and NIN leader Trent Reznor was profiled briefly as the song’s composer while doing small interviews with MTV2 for their 22 Greatest Bands and Videos list. Aside from the news about him producing Zach De La Roca’s new solo album and the on-going speculation about the Tapeworm side-project with Maynard James Keenan, which has been delayed due to lawsuits over labels. NIN has been dormant for nearly two years since releasing their live album and DVD for “And All That Could Have Been” in early 2002. One NIN member that has been profiled lately in the past few months is multi-instrumentalist Danny Lohner, who recently scored amounts of acclaim for assembling and producing the soundtrack to the vampire flick “Underworld” and is currently working on several projects including one with former Limp Bizkit (I’m saying the name now that the band is in immense decline) guitarist Wes Borland and an album for supermodel/actress Milla Jovovich.

With the small profile NIN has been going under lately along with the rumors that they left Interscope Records has many people wondering what exactly going and to tell you the truth folks, I have no idea what’s going on with NIN. In fact, I think whenever the band hits a dormant stage, it’s fairly obvious they might have lost a few fans there and there to other things. I’m still here although I’ve become more interested in other things lately but now, I’m back at the NIN front with some big news that was just revealed in the current issue of “Alternative Press” magazine about the band’s upcoming new album slated for a 2004 release that is entitled “bleedthrough”. While this time around, NIN isn’t on the cover (Good Charlotte is and I am not going to have them, be in my magazine collection) but longtime contributor and NIN loyalist Jason Pettigrew wrote the following:

"The record explores loss and possible discovery of self," says Trent Reznor about the follow-up to 1999's The Fragile, "along with alternate layers of reality and perception set inside a nightmare you can't seem to wake up from; with lots of feedback." Reznor has enlisted Atticus Ross, Jerome Dillon, Leo Herrera, mix engineer Rich Costey and Rick Rubin to help mold bleedthrough, which will feature new songs such as "The Line Begins To Blur," "Everyday Is Exactly The Same" and "My Dead Friend." This time out, Reznor is introducing high-tech to low-life. "Computers, among other things, are ruining music these days," he says. "I hate the Pro Tooled sound of perfection and everything being 'fixed.' This record is most definitely 'un-fixed.'" And when it comes to touring behind the release, T. Rez is planning on reinventing the will. "It won't be the last tour over again. That person isn't here anymore."

This little blurb that appears in the new issue is the preview of “bleedthrough” from Jason Pettigrew reveals very little on what is going to come. Of course, some are wondering what will NIN sound like in this new record and where does the title “bleedthrough” come from?

Now it is well known that NIN always has album titles that speak in a very bleak way like “Pretty Hate Machine”, “Broken”, “The Downward Spiral”, and “The Fragile” and “bleedthrough” is no exception. While Reznor has gained notoriety as a perfectionist, like My Bloody Valentine’s Kevin Shields, his music was always worth waiting for. That’s because NIN never repeats the same format twice and I think the significance of the title “bleedthrough” means that this record will sound like something that will bleed in your mind and soul. Does this mean are we expecting harsh-sounding again but a different format? In some cases, Yes.

What will it sound like? Well, NIN drummer/multi-instrumentalist Jerome Dillon has said for the past few months that the album will sound something very melancholic and stripped-down. So it could mean that for those who owned the Internet-only release “Still” (which is also available in the deluxe edition of the “And All That Could Have Been” live album) were revealed to a preview of what NIN might sound like. “Still” as a record sounded very stripped-down, deconstructed, and acoustic-driven along with elements of melancholia. This is something every NIN fan should own at this particularly moment or for those waiting to hear the next album should get this record to have an inkling on what to expect.

In the names Reznor mentioned along with Dillon, longtime NIN engineer/resident porno freak Leo Herrera, and 12 Rounds/Tapeworm multi-instrumentalist Atticus Ross comes a new name in Rich Costey, who’s worked with likes of Fiona Apple, Phillip Glass, Audioslave, and Mars Volta. Another name mentioned is legendary co-founder of Def Jam Records Rick Rubin. Rubin in the past has done minor contribution for NIN including a remix of “Piggy” for the “Further Down the Spiral” EP and gave suggestions to Reznor on working in Big Sur, California prior to the sessions for “The Fragile”. While NIN member Danny Lohner wasn’t mentioned, it’s because he’s been doing several outside projects although he has recently in the past few years been giving co-writing credit on a few NIN songs and it’s obvious he has contributed only minimally. Then there’s a couple of names missing here, engineer Dave “Rave” Ogilvie and “The Fragile” producer Alan Moulder. Ogilvie and Moulder have been working on other records though it’s unclear about their status at this time.

One big sentence that was mentioned in Alt-Press article is Reznor announcing the death of computers and Pro Tools as far as NIN is concerned and that’s a very bold move for a band that has made a seminal sound in combining hard rock and electronic music. I think it’s because with the way records have been made recently, it sounds too easy and too contrived these days and like “The Fragile”, Reznor I think is aiming for a sound of imperfection or something natural, which is why there wasn’t a lot of synthesizers heard in that record. Everything these days sounds like a machine and Reznor I think one on aspect, is joining the anti-comp movement but in a much more subversive way.

Now I admit as a longtime loyalist, I’m excited about the new record. What I’m not excited about though is the song titles that have been revealed like “Everyday Is Exactly The Same”, “My Dead Friend” (which might be about Rodney Robertson, who they dedicated the live album to), and “The Line Begins To Blur”. Even to my own standards, this seems that Trent has run out of ideas as far as song titles go. They seem a bit mediocre but I just hope he changes it quickly or something and the lyrics don’t fall down into clichés like the way “Deep” did a few years back.

Finally, there was a mention of what the band would do live after the release of the album. If the band does go into that sound of “Still”, it’s obvious it’ll be a mix of two formats. One format of NIN classics where things will be loud and raucous and the other will be more intimate and very stripped-down. Again, this is a new Nine Inch Nails we’re expecting and that is very refreshing. Besides, bands like Metallica and Korn try to go back to old sounds that made them popular and end up looking stupid in front of many. Reznor will never go back to the “Pretty Hate Machine” sound or “The Downward Spiral” because he’s not that person anymore. He’s moved and we’ll never hear “Down In It” again and at least I have the bootlegs. So this is thevoid99, the Unofficial NIN Spokesman @ Epinions.com signing off until another edition arrives very soon.
