I have a slope next to my house that I have issues with. I built a rock wall at the bottom from the rocks on my property, and the sandy fill washing out reached the tops of those rocks already. I needed something more to start holding the slope together, especially during these horrific "100 year storms" weve been getting - 3 of them since we moved here. 300 years goes by awful fast.
My idea was daylilies, but the price most everywhere I looked was so expensive I was really getting deterred from doing this. Fortunately, I came across the website for Classy Groundcovers.
Classy Groundcovers is cheaper for many plants over other gardening and plant websites. This is because they DONT guarantee their plants. This is important to know upfront because if the plants die you wont get a replacement. Its also important to know because, unlike other websites Ive ordered from which monitor the weather where I live before shipping, Classy Groundcovers doesnt.
For this reason, its important to know what youre ordering and if youre ready to plant it. Classy Groundcovers offers free shipping - a big plus. You can also put a shipping date in at checkout if you think you can predict when the time will be right to plant in your area. They are conscientious in that they only ship on days when the plants will reach you before the weekend and prevent them from sitting around in a warehouse.
Its easy to find plants at Classy Groundcovers. On the home page there are drop-down selections for search on the left-hand side. For those of us in more adverse climates, this makes it easy to see exactly what will work in our planting zone. Other options include Bloom Color, Sun Exposure, and the purpose to the planting. I already had a pretty good idea as to what I wanted when I wandered onto the site. I was very pleased at their Daylily Hybrid Mix which offered 50 bare-root plants of a variety of Daylilies for $28.50. Prior to this, the cheapest I was able to find any daylily bulbs was 3 for $10.
I ordered 100 of them, thinking this was like other sites where they watched the weather and sent them to my area when the planting time was right. Imagine my surprise when they arrived a couple of days later, just in time for an 8-inch snowstorm in April! They came by FedEx too, which I was impressed with considering the shipping was free.
The plants looked good and were wrapped in newspaper along with some dirt. I tried to keep the plants moist in the box and keep our animals out of it. The recent noreaster hit us the following Monday and left snow/ice/rain/flooding behind. All in all, it was more than 10 days before I could put the plants in the ground. My fault, really, because I should have paid more attention. When I went to put them in the ground, they didnt look so hot.
I emailed customer service after reading about their lack of plant guarantee. This is why their plants are cheaper than many other sites. Those sites build into the cost the fact that they pretty much know theres a percentage they will have to re-ship. Classy Groundcovers does not. Well. Surprisingly a woman from their place got back to me that same afternoon and told me to cut away the parts that had yellowed and browned and just plant everything else. These plants were pretty hard to kill!
I did as she told me to and they do look a lot better since being in the ground. They may have taken a set-back this first year, but I think Ill have success with the plants overall.
If you are looking for a good price on plants, youll find it at Classy Groundcovers. Make sure you have your planting date in mind when you order, or just order when the time is right. I would have no qualms about ordering from them again seeing how good the lilies seem to be doing even with the adverse start they had. Next time I know better!
