Mirassou Vineyard Select Central Coast Cabernet Sauvignon, 2000

Sep 21 '03

The Bottom Line Six generations of excellence. Mirassou wines are worth seeking out.

Well, summer is almost over... and what a summer it has been!  I’ve had an opportunity to try a number of great wines over the past few months, culminating with a tasting of several Gold Medal winning wines at the Los Angeles County Fair this weekend.

Lately, It seems that I have been concentrating on young, fruity Cabernet Sauvignon wines from California and Australia. This evening, I settled down with a delightful Central Coast Cabernet Sauvignon from a family winery that has been producing award-winning Bordeaux style wines since 1854 -- Mirassou.

Mirassou Vineyard Select  Central Coast Cabernet Sauvignon, 2000

Alcohol: 13.5% by volume.

Production: Cabernet Sauvignon harvested from select Central Coast vineyards; oak aged.

Appearance: Dark crimson/lavender color with a pale lavender trim.

Aroma: Bright, rich, with a fruity focus that concentrates on a bright, appealing raspberry tone accented by dark caneberry fruit. Very appealing aroma.

Flavor: Lively, fresh, fruity blend of dark cherry, ripe raspberry, and bright currant flavors. Fine, tea-like tannins with excellent fruit presentation. Nicely structured and balanced. A slight bit of spicy oak trails into a medium-long finish.

Price and Availability: This wine normally retails for about $9 or $10 per 750ml bottle in California. Produced and bottle by Mirassou Vineyards, San Jose, California. Fairly easy to find in California, and sometimes can be had on sale for under $7.

Recommendations: Drink now. I pulled this wine from my wine case at 55°F and allowed it to warm to a cool room temperature of 65°F. This is a fresh, tasty, well-made wine that worked great with my dinner of grilled sirloin. I enjoyed a final glass with my dessert of organic milk chocolate filled with raisin and pecans. It would, perhaps, work best with a slice of New York style cheesecake. In any event, a very good everyday wine that is affordably priced.

Verdict:
     Appearance: 4/5
     Aroma: 23/25
     Flavor: 34/40
     Body: 8/10
     Overall Quality: 17/20
     ------------------------------
     My Score: 86 -- 4 stars.

This wine is a value-priced performer. I would buy again.
