Censorship By The PTC

Sep 07 '03 (Updated Sep 08 '03)

The Bottom Line Should our lives be dictated by a bunch of bored housewives?

I've quoted this before, and I'll likely do it again.. it's just very profound and sums up my own feelings so well:

America is a country that was started by a bunch of people who wanted to be left the hell alone. It’s now a country filled with people whose favorite past-time is trying to force other people to live a certain way ~ Vormancian

Well, there is one more group trying to tell us what to watch. They have a petition and email campaign going to get the sponsors to stop buying ad slots on certain shows with the end result of trying to force them off the air.

Who, you ask, is so full of themselves that they think they know what's best for me to watch? Well, I'ma tell ya who. The Parents Television Council

http://www.parentstv.org/

Go see for yourself. They apparently started out trying to dictate what shows were bad for kids (which was bad enough), now they are off on a power trip and also trying to get some late night shows taken off the air.

Shows like Friends... and Will & Grace. Unreal. Let me copy a blurb or two here to show their warped stance....

Tens of thousands of PTC members have sent a loud and clear message to Nip/Tuck sponsors: Stop Underwriting Filth! Your advertising dollars are allowing FX to push decency standards for basic cable into the toilet.

OK.. CABLE? We PAY for cable.. we pay for it so we can by-pass all the idiotic censorship that goes on with broadcast TV...yet each year even Cable shows get more and more censored. This is BS. If these folks don't like what's on it, then why do they subscribe to it in the first place?

The PTC asks you to contact these sponsors today to thank them for taking a stand for decency by refusing to underwrite the irresponsible and gratuitous content on Nip/Tuck. Send your thank you email to thankyousponsors@parentstv.org and we will forward your comments to them.

the Parents Television Council demanded that the Federal Communications Commission “take action to better define and enforce commonsense decency standards for broadcast television.”

The PTC outlined five specific steps that the FCC must take to ensure the decency standards are enforced. The organization called on the Commission to enact these steps

How dare they. Who the hell do they think they are? First off, as far as the original intent (to get bad kids show banned), that was misguided and scary enough. They don't have time to watch their kids and rear them, so they want to eliminate whatever their kids may want to watch. I'm sorry, if you don't have time to be a parent then don't have kids! Do NOT try to infringe on my parenting rights because you are lazy. I would not be surprised if these idiots were raised by the same folks who tried to have Tom Sawyer and other classic books banned. Infuriating.

They didn't stop there though. Oh no. Now they want to tell ME what a watch. They want to dictate MY programming. That is a baldfaced backwoods bullshit battle by a bunch of bored, bromidic, baren, brainless bitches.

These cackling cretins contrive to coerce crowds into compliance with this cockamamie crap. I implore you, the intelligent freedom loving members of Epinions, to counteract this attempt at censorship.

I repeat:

America is a country that was started by a bunch of people who wanted to be left the hell alone. It’s now a country filled with people whose favorite past-time is trying to force other people to live a certain way ~ Vormancian

Pleas do not let these people win. This is freakin America. If they don't like what's on TV then they can excersize their right to change the damn channel! Do not let them win this ill-conceived notion of telling me and you what we can and cannot watch.

And to the sponsors I will be sending this link too, know this: They threaten to boycott your product if you continue to advertise on the shows they deem unworthy.. *I* will boycott if you bow to their pressure. If you continue to sponsor these shows, on the other hand, I will bend over backwards to try your products.

UPDATE

It is not just the sponsors they are trying to blackball into compliance here..they are hounding and threatening the FCC to make harsher rules that would take most shows off the air that you and I currently enjoy. Please do email mpowell@fcc.gov and tell him to NOT bow to their idiotic demands!

You can find their list of demands to the FCC here:

Update Again
Apparently they are taking me seriously. The PTC has begun taking down a few of their pages and selected paragraphs. Did I make them think? Or is it just a case of CYA? Probably the latter. I will not dismiss them as harmless even with the changes they are now making. Oh no. I'm keeping the pressure on the FCC and those sponsors to stand their ground.
