DRIVE, SHAKE IT UP, YOU MIGHT THINK & OTHER HITS – The CARS

Jul 20 '03 (Updated Mar 02 '05)

The Bottom Line The group “The CARS” consisted of “Ric Ocasek” on guitar and vocals, “Benjamin Orr” on bass, “Elliot Easton” on guitar, “Greg Hawkes” on keyboards and “David Robinson” on drums.

“The Cars” are considered to be the one of the most successful “New Wave” group of the 70’s. The group was formed in Boston, MA in 1976. The group was started by “Ric Ocasek” and “Benjamin Orr”. Ric met Ben in Cleveland and they became close friends. Orr had led a house band called “The Honeydreamers” on the very short lived TV show called “Upbeat” which was on CBS from July through September 1955. They began writing songs together and led different bands in Cleveland, New York City and at “Woodstock”. They also performed in Cambridge, MA in 1970 and decided to live there. In 1972 they formed a folk rock trio called “Millwood” with keyboardist “Greg Hawkes”. They released a single on “Paramount Records” in late 1972 which never made the charts at all. In 1974 Ric and Ben formed a new group called “Cap’n Swing” with lead guitarist “Elliott Easton”. They broke up in 1975 and the next year they formed the group “The Cars”. They added drummer “Dave Robinson” from the group “Modern Lovers” and who had also been with “DMZ” and also added keyboardist “Greg Hawkes”. They would make their live debut on 31 December 1976 performing at a show at the Pearse Air Force Base in Portsmouth, NH.

In February 1977 they begin performing regularly at a Boston, MA nightclub called “The Rat and sign “Fred Lewis” as their manager. In March they are the opening act for “Bob Seger” at Boston’s Music Hall. The group sends a demo tape of a song titled “Just What I Needed” to Boston radio stations WBCN and to WCOZ and it became the stations’ most requested song in a very short time. They next open for artists performing in Boston over the next several months such as “The J. Giles Band”, “Foreigner” and “Nils Lofgren”. In November after been seen performing at Holly Cross College in Boston they sign a record deal with “Elektra Records”. In early 1978 they begin recording songs for their first album in England. On 17 June their first release titled “Just What I Needed” debuts on the US singles charts and would peak at #27 in September. On 23 September their album “The Cars” debuts on the US charts where it would peak at #18 in March 1979 and sell over a million copies. Their second release from this album was “My Best Friend’s Girl” that debuted on the singles charts on 21 October and would later peak at #35 in December.

In January 1979 they are voted “Best New Band of the Year” in Rolling Stones Magazine for 1978 in their annual readers poll. Their 3rd and final release from their first album was titled “Good Times Roll” that debuted on the US charts on 17 March and would eventually peak at #41. Their next release would be their first single from there soon to be released 2nd album titled “Let’s Go” that debuts on 30 June and later peaks at #14 on the US charts. Their next release “Candy-O” debuts on the US album charts on 7 July and would later peak at #3 and sell over a million copies. In August they hold a concert in New York City’s Central Park playing for over 500,000 fans. On 13 October “It’s All I Can Do” debuts on the US singles charts and later peaks at #41. They next release “Touch And Go” that debuts on the singles charts on 6 September and their next album titled “Panorama” debuts on the charts the same day. “Panorama” would be their 3rd million selling record and would eventually peak at #5 on the charts. In February 1981 they purchased Intermedia Studio in Boston and rename it Synchro Sound and record their future records there. On 21 November “Shake It Up” debuts on the singles charts followed the next week by the debut of their 4th album with the same name. The album would sell over one million copies and eventually peak at #9 on the US charts. On 27 March 1982 “Since You’re Gone” debuts on the US singles charts and later peaks at #41. In September they perform in front of over 400,000 fans at the US Festival in San Bernadino, CA along with “Jackson Browne”, “Fleetwood Mac”, “The Grateful Dead”, Eddie Money”, “The Police”, “Santana”, “The Talking Heads” and many others.

On 2 February 1983 Ric releases a solo album titled "Beatitude" on "Geffen" records
that would later peak at #28 on the US album charts. "Something To Grab For" with "Connect Up To Me" on the B-side debuts for him on the singles charts on 12 February and later peaks at #47 on the pop charts and peaks at #5 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. He would have 2 other solo releases during the year "Prove" and "Jimmy Jimmy". Both would make the Club Play Singles charts and "Jimmy Jimmy" also made the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart where it peaked at #25. Greg also releases a solo album titled "Niagara Falls" on "Passport" records this year but it fails to make the US charts. The group recorded their 5th album titled “Heartbeat City” after a very extended break where all the members pursued solo gigs. The album debuts on the US charts on 7 April 1984 and eventually went to #3 on the album charts. Their first single release from this album was called “You Might Think” that peaked at #7 on the heels of their first ever hit Music Video. They released 3 other songs from this same album this year “Magic” that peaked at #12, “Drive” would peak at #3 and “Hello Again” peaked at #20. These four big hit singles helped propel the sales of the album to triple platinum status by July 1985. In 1985 Elliot released his debut solo album titled “Change No Change” that would stop at #99 on the US charts in April.

They released "The Cars Greatest Hits" in 1985 which also had one new never before heard song on it that would eventually be released as a single called "Tonight She Comes" that debuted on the singles chart on 2 November and later peaks at #7. Also on the album was a song originally on their 1981 "Shake It Up Album" titled "I'm Not The One" that is finally released as a single on 1 February 1986 and it would peak at #32. Also in 1986 the group members once again went on to do solo things. Ric would have 2 singles on the US pop charts this year in “Emotion In Motion” that made it to #15 and “True To You” that only went to #75. His final solo album was titled “This Side Of Paradise” that peaked at #31. On 8 November Benjamin’s solo release titled “Stay The Night” on “Elektra” records debuts and would later peak at #24 on the US pop singles charts. His one and only solo album titled “The Lace” would peak at #86 on the US charts. He would have one final charting single titled “Too Hot To Stop” that would peak at #25 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks charts in 1987. The groups 7th and final top 40 album titled “Door To Door” debuted on 26 September 1987 and would later peak at #26 on the US charts. Their next single, which was from this album “You Are The Girl” debuts on the charts on 29 August and would peak at #17 on the US pop singles chart. On 11 September they perform live at the 4th annual MTV Video Music awards show held at the Universal Amphitheater in Universal City in California. On 14 November “Strap Me In” debuts on the US pop singles charts but stalls at #85.

On 23 January 1988 “Coming Up You” their final single as a group debuts on the US pop singles charts and later peaks at #74. On 1 February they hold a press conference to announce they are splitting up the group. In January 1989 Ric’s son “Christopher Ocasek” releases a solo album that fails to make the charts and then forms the group known as “Glamour Camp”. On 23 August Ric marries his long-time girlfriend and Czechoslovakian model “Paulina Porizkova” on the Caribbean Island of St. Barts. On 22 April 1990 Ric performs solo at the annual “Earth Day” celebration in Central Park in New York City along with the “B-52’s”, “Hall & Oats” and many others. Having signed a new contract with “Reprise” records he releases “Fireball Zone” in November but it fails to make the US album charts. In 1993 he has 2 solo albums titled “Quick Change World” and “Negative Theater” and neither one made the US album charts. In May 1994 the original members of “The Cars” without Ben meet and decide to rehearse. In August Ric produces a debut self-titled album for a new group called “Weezer” and it debuts on the charts on 31 December. It eventually sells over 1 million copies and would peak at #16 on the US album charts in 1995.
Ric performs his very first solo gig at the Elbow Room in New York City on 5 September 1979. On 9 September Ric’s final solo album on “Columbia” records” titled “Troubilizing” is released but it fails to make the US charts. On 19 February 2002 “Rhino” records released a 20-song album titled “The Cars Complete Greatest Hits” that eventually peaks at #144 on the US charts. Some Song Lyrics

DRIVE
Who's gonna tell you when
It's too late
Who's gonna tell you things
Aren't so great
You can't go on
Thinking nothing's wrong
Who's gonna drive you home tonight

Who's gonna pick you up
When you fall
Who's gonna hang it up
When you call
Who's gonna pay attention
To your dreams
Who's gonna plug their ears
When you scream
You can't go on
Thinking nothing's wrong
Who's gonna drive you home tonight

Who's gonna hold you down
When you shake
Who's gonna come around
When you break
You can't go on
Thinking nothing's wrong
Who's gonna drive you home tonight

Oh you know you can't go on
Thinking nothing's wrong
Who's gonna drive you home tonight

MAGIC
Summer turns me upside down
Summer, summer, summer
It's like a merry go round
I see you under the midnight
All shackles and bows
How far will you take it
Well no one knows
Don't let me go
I got a hold on you tonight
Oh, oh it's magic
When i'm with you
Oh, oh it's magic
You know it's true
Got a hold on you
Twisted under sideways down

I know you're getting twisted
And you can't calm down
I see you under the midnight
Love darts in your eyes
How far can you take it
Till you realize
There's magic in your eyes

MY BEST FRIEND’S GIRL
you're always dancing down the street
with your suede blue eyes
and every new boy that you meet
he doesn't know the real surprise

(here she comes again)
when she's dancing 'neath the starry sky
oo, she'll make you flip
here she comes again
when she's dancing 'neath the starry sky
I kinda like the way she dips
well she's my best friend's girl
she's my best friend's girl-irl
but she used to be mine

you've got your nuclear boots
and your drip dry glove
oo when you bite your lip
it's some reaction to love, o-ove, o-ove
here she comes again
when she's dancing 'neath the starry sky
yeah, I think you'll flip
here she comes again
when she's dancing 'neath the starry sky
here she comes again
I kinda like the way, I like the way she dips
cause she's my best friend's girl
well she's my best friend's girl-irl
and she used to be mine
she's so fine

you're always dancing down the street
with your suede blue eye-eyes
and every new boy that you meet
doesn't know the real surprise

here she comes again
when she's dancing 'neath the starry sky
here she comes again
oh, she'll make you flip
here she comes again
when she's dancing 'neath the starry sky
here she comes again
I kinda like the way, I like the way she dips
cause she's my best friend's girl, uh
she's my best friend's girl-irl-u-irl
she used to be mine
she so, fine

SHAKE IT UP
Dance all night, play all day
Don't let nothing get in the way
Dance all night, keep the beat
Don't you worry 'bout two left feet
Just shake it up

Dance all night, get real loose
You don't need no bad excuse
Dance all night with anyone
Don't let nobody pick your fun
Just shake it up

Dance all night go, go, go
Dance all night, get real low
Go all night, get real hot
Shake it up until you pop
Dance all night whirl your hair
Make the night cats stop and stare
Dance all night go to work
Do the move with the quirky jerk
Just shake it up

YOU MIGHT THINK
you might think I’m crazy
to hang around with
you maybe you think I'm lucky
to have something to do
but I think that you're wild
and inside me is some child
you might think it's foolish
or maybe it's untrue
you might think i'm crazy
but all I want is you

might think it's hysterical
but I know when you're weak
you think you're in the movies
and everything's so deep
but I think that you're wild
when you flash that fragile smile
you might think it's foolish
what you put me through
you might think
i'm crazy but all I want is you

and it's hard so hard to take
there's no escape without a scrape
you kept it going till the sun fell down
you kept it going
you might think I’m delirious
the way I run you down
but somewhere sometime
when you're curious
I’ll be back around
and I think that you're wild
and so uniquely styled
you might think it's foolish
this chancy rendezvous
you might think I’m crazy
but all I want is you

JAGUARDOG’S FINAL THOUGHTS

You are probably wondering why I strayed off course a little to cover a “New Wave” group. They are not part of the Rock ‘N Roll music history seen you say? I disagree that they are not a part of Rock ‘N Roll or their music is. Their music mostly falls under the category of New Wave but also is considered Rock as well as Pop Rock. Rock or Pop Rock qualifies the Rock ‘N Roll part as far as I am concerned. Their sound is hard and heavy, playful, quirky, tense, anxious, ironic, amiable, good-natured and fast paced. Some songs by them like “Magic” and “Heartbeat City” are still big hits and are still played today on many Rock stations 25 to 30 years later. I would have to rate their Music “PG13” as some songs have questionable parts in them. Great overall CD here and a must for any Hard Rock/New Wave fans to add to their collection. I owed a few of their singles at one time and 2 albums and this one CD. I hope to get more of their CD’s as time and money permit especially “Heartbeat City”. “The Cars” were one of my 2 favorite New Wave groups along with “Blondie”. Up next in my review of “Rock ‘N Roll artists begins back in 1950 with a man that was a crossover from Country to Pop and back to Country again. He had 135 charting singles on the country charts and 48 on the pop singles charts Mr. “Johnny Cash”. As always I hope everyone has a Safe and Wonderful Weekend, thanks for dropping by and taking the time to read and maybe leave a comment and as always God Bless You All, Ron.

P.S. I would also like to thank "sacredsongs" for his/her assistance in finding a few errors today.

Here is a list of ALL the records I could find on "The Cars" and on the members as solo's, charting and not-charting as well as some imported records.
