We aint "Aint It Cool News"

Jan 01 '03

The Bottom Line Let's be ourselves when writing movie reviews and not Aint-It-Cool_News.

A troubling pattern has developed in the Movie Reviews. I notice that reviewers are trying to be "cute" emulating the "Aint It Cool News" style of reviews. (aint-it-cool-news.com)
As an example of what I mean, see the sample of Aint it Cool News and a sample of Epinions review:

1) Aint it Cool:You spent an entire night on train trying to get to the opening in another country because yours isn't showing it yet... and you didn’t sleep well at all. Then, you make a final part of your journey by car. When you arrive, you have to hurry up to find and check into your hotel, and to eat a little something. Eventually, when you are sitting in your place at the theater, you feel that nothing can waste this experience... Buuuut if the projectionist then decides to start the movie without turning off the house lights and, more seriously, to show the movie in a 1,33:1 format (as a normal television) instead of widescreen, you easily begin to feel like you're being thrust into a Argento-like nightmare. Of course, I’m talking about my screening of THE TWO TOWERS.

2) Epinion: What a night. It's now 3:45 am as I start writing this review, and I will note that I just returned from the 12:01 am screening of Lord of The Rings: The Two Towers. I bought my tickets on my way into work today, at the ...6 theatre, which is not too far from my apartment in downtown ... Canada. When I met a friend that night at 11 pm, there was already a huge line-up stretching down from deep inside the theatre halls onto the street. We waited for 40 minutes before being let inside. My friend secured us some good seats and I lined up for popcorn and drinks.

I'm not singling anyone out, but I see this happening more and more on Epinions. The "what happened before I got to the movie". What has that got to do with the movie? Unless you can tie in your actions before the movie with the movie, I think it's pointless.

I think if you have a pre-movie review narrative to write, it should go at the end of the movie review.

When reading these reviews, I have to spend time going through the pre-"what I did before the movie stuff" before getting to the heart of the review and I think (my opinion) this is a dangerous precedent.

I also would like to see the reviewers clear up their spelling mistakes. I read too many reviews with multiple sp. mistakes which takes away from the review. Hey -- it only takes a good spell checker in a Word program to find out if there are mistakes; plus Epinions have a spell checker. Use it!
