Not a Harley But Still Pretty Darn Good

Jul 25 '02

The Bottom Line This is a fine brewpub. If you are traveling through New York State or visiting the Adirondacks, you may want to pay a visit here.

I will grant that few people would view Glens Falls, NY as a Mecca for craft beer. Of course, veterans of the ongoing quest to find new beer will know that great beer pops up in the strangest of places. There are no hard rules on where beer can be brewed. One must always be on the lookout for fine brew.

A lot of the best beers do come from places off the beaten path. I've already written about Cooper's Cave Brewing Co, a microbrewery from Glens Falls. But this town also boasts a fine brewpub in its downtown area. I have had the pleasure of visiting Davidson Brothers Brewing Co on two different occasions. I found myself extremely impressed with their beers both times.

The first time I was there, I had an oatmeal stout and a barely wine. Both were very good. It made me feel sad that I don't get up that way very often. The oatmeal stout was dark with a creamy head. It had a touch of sweetness. The barley wine was very sharp and probably young. It seemed to need some time to mellow.

About a month ago, I was able to make a return visit. This visit was better because it included a late lunch to go with the beer. My experience with brewpubs is that the food will always be good. It may not always be gourmet or the "best meal ever" but I have never had bad food at a brewpub. At very least, they can be counted on to serve you a very good sandwich.

We sat a table on their outdoor patio. They even had a folk singer playing live outside. It was a perfect evening for an outdoor meal. They had several chicken and steak entrees but this was a sandwich meal. I had a cajun chicken sandwich which paired perfectly with their IPA. This one came across in character as being closer to an English IPA. It was well hopped but wasn't overwhelming. It also had a surprisingly pronounced malt character. At times, it seemed a little sweet. It was still an enjoyable beer and at 5.9% abv, it will get you home.

I tried small samples of their smoked porter and their Scotch ale. The Scotch ale had a nice peat texture and was strong at 8.2% abv. I elected to go with the smoked porter for my second beer. It wasn't as strong at 5.2% abv but seemed like a better beer for the moment. The smoked porter also had a bit of a peat character. The nutty, toasty flavor also had a slight pork nuance. It was full bodied and had a surprising hop finish. While it may not make anyone forget Alaskan Smoked Porter or Stone Smoked Porter, it was a very good beer.

This was a very satisfying meal. The sandwich and fries were very good. The beers were also very good. They had ten different beers available on draught. They also sell 22 oz bombers and half gallon growlers. These are drawn directly from the taps. They also sell six packs. They contract brew their beers at The Shipyard Brewing Co. A friend of mine purchased a six pack of their IPA and gave me a bottle. It was a fairly accurate interpretation of the draught version.

Davidson Brothers is a great brewpub. The beers are really good and the food is good. It is a shame that I don't get up that way very often. If I lived in that area, I would surely stop there on a regular basis. Not a bad little town: Two good beer havens. A friend was informing me that wrestler Hacksaw Jim Duggan is originally from Glens Falls, NY. I can't confirm that fact but I will say that between Cooper's Cave and Davidson Brothers, I can forgive them if it's true.
