Pros: Um... Barrett and Wilkinson weren't terrible...
Cons: ... everyone and everything else was!
The Bottom Line: Watch this film, or repeatedly poke yourself in the eye with a sharp object. The enjoyment level is about the same (though the sharp object probably edges it.)

| captaind's Full Review: The Last Kiss |
The Last Kiss is a Hollywood remake of an Italian film L Ultimo Bacio. Experience tells us that Hollywood remakes of European films are rarely worth the effort (Vanilla Sky [from Abre Tus Ojos] being a good example), but you never know until you watch something, do you?
In this case, I really should have known better than to give it the benefit of the doubt!
In The Last Kiss, Michael is living the life he always wanted good job, in love with a beautiful woman, etc. Approaching 30 hes having his mid-life crisis though he doesnt like to think thats what it is. The first of many inconsistencies comes along at this early stage in the film when his partner Jenna becomes pregnant, something which was not planned and therefore must have come as something of a surprise, he finds himself feeling that his future is too mapped out. (One of his complaints is that he looked at his life and couldnt see any more surprises.) Um
didnt he just have a surprise? Apparently not, for he is now terrified that he will have the sort of life he has always expected or dreamt of. Isnt the whole point of surprises that you cant see them coming anyway? Hmm
Anyway, its not just Michael whos having a crisis, but all of his friends are busy wrecking their lives and the lives of everyone close to them, though Michael is the only one who has a younger woman throwing herself at him. Michael happily obliges the audience by proving that hes as stupid as pretty much every other character in the film by meeting up with her secretly.
And
blah de blah de blah. Im sorry but there really is no point going into the rest of the plot, it was predictable from start to finish and full of thoroughly unpleasant characters that I couldnt possibly bring myself to care about. The script was dire and the acting matched it only Jacinda Barrett (Poseidon as Jenna and Tom Wilkinson as her father showed any real talent whatsoever. Zach Braff as Michael looked semi-comatose (or possibly drugged) almost the whole way through this movie and while Rachel Bilson as the younger woman was quite pretty, as a 29 year-old man myself (like the main character), I really have to say that such an air-head really wouldnt provide much temptation. (To a teenager or very early 20s man yes, but not to someone nearly 30.) The soundtrack obviously thought it was hip and trendy but I found it to be very nondescript. Most of the humour in the film consisted either of people screaming obscenities at each other (I only describe this as humour even in inverted commas because of the reaction of some of the audience) and utterly predictable slapstick.
It may not come as a great surprise to you by now if I said that I didnt like this film. In fact it went beyond dislike or disappointment (as the trailers had made it look like it could potentially be a good film), I actually loathe this film I rarely come away with such a negative impression of a film, and I cant remember ever thinking hasnt it finished yet!?!?) in my whole life. Perhaps it didnt help that I was expected more of a romantic comedy; however, what this film thinks it is I dont know. Is it a drama? No, because a drama has to give you characters you care about first, otherwise what happens to them are simply events, not dramatic. Theres no humour in it there are parts that are supposed to be funny, but they fail miserably. I could only recommend it possibly to those whose age or IQ are less than
16, but then I wouldnt recommend it to under 16s because its full of swearing, nudity, and sex scenes. So that leaves only those with an IQ of 15 or under
(NB no offence intended to anyone who did like this film or those who have reviewed it more positively than me, this was just my impression of the film!!)
