Compaq Presario 5423 & Customer Support

The Bottom Line Do Not Buy A Compaq Computer Period. Poor Customer Service, Poor Product Support. This will be my one and only Purchase of a Compaq product.
Does anyone remember the days when our motherboards could not accept large hard drives, and they had to be partitioned? Compaq has decided to bring back history by now partitioning their drives with what they call "Recovery" information. Is there any mention of this in the users manual? Of course not. So if you buy one of these computers and decide to put in a second hard drive, best leave that "ghost D drive" alone or your going to have a major crash. Of course that isn't the only issue, because if you ever plan to format your drive to clean it up and get it running in top shape, (something that should be done every now and then) since the "Recovery" cd does not have that option in the first place to do a format.
If you think that isn't a big deal, how about the fact that Compaq no longer (if they ever did) puts in the necessary Restore software to get you up and running again. You have to contact Compaq and order a "Quick Restore" set of cd's and are given the option of having them shipped "over night" for a charge of $15.00 in addition to the $10.63 charge for the cd's themselves or having them shipped "First Class Mail".
Now if you think that doesn't sound like a big deal either, how about the fact that you have no idea should you chose "First Class" as to when you will get those cd's, and that leads us to my story:
Purchased and crashed computer on January 28, 2002. Called technical support and found out I would have to order the "Quick Restore" cd's, order placed that night. Called the 29th as we wanted to change that order from "First Class" to "Overnight" we were informed the item had already shipped (not processed, shipped) After not received the disks by Feb 4th which would have been 4 business days and a Saturday, we were informed that in reality they were not sent the 29th the order was process the 29th, and even better yet was that the order did not ship until Feb 1, 2002. When asked why it took 3 days from processing an order to shipping, we were told the item was out of stock.
I wonder what that meant for anyone who ordered those cd's and paid for "Over Night Delivery"
Well here it is Feb 8, 2002 and surprise, surprise, still no cd's. After spending time first with the order department who more or less told me to be patient that the order would more than likely be here by Feb 14, 2002 (at which time they will try to track it if not received) of course I never got an explaination as to how they would track "First Class Mail" to spending a total time of 104 min, between 3 other representatives from Compaq.
The last rep told me that she had talked with the order dept. and the cd's were in flight! That has to be the longest flight in history from Texas to Illinois. Officially I placed that order on Jan 28, as of Monday Feb 11, it will be two full weeks of have a brand new dead unbootable computer. We have called Compaq a total of 7 times and been lied to outright, and given the run around. I have no idea when or even "if" I will ever receive those cd's.
I would advice anyone interested in buying a new computer to avoid Compaq. I had better service with Packard Bell when I bought my first computer 10 years ago. Sadly NEC no longer makes computers for the home user, as they had fantastic tech support, and customer support.
