The 10 Best "Horror" Movies Ever
Aug 07 '01
The Bottom Line All of these movies are "must see" movies for those who enjoy being scared.
Horror movies were designed to frighten and even invoke a terrible fear into our everyday lives. They entertain and captivate our imaginations by revealing our nightmares, what makes us vulnerable, and of course our fear of death or the unknown. With this in mind, I have created a list of the ten best horror movies ever.
10) Dracula (1931) Known as one of the earliest classic American horror movies. Travel into another time jagged in the side of the Carpathian mountains of Translyvania in Eastern Europe. Witness the courtyard of the strange crumbling castle, coffins, unknowing victims and meet the true dracula himself. I was surprised how terrified I was from the very start. The black and white theme only enhances the terror you feel while watching.
9) The Silence Of The Lambs (1991) Starring Anthony Hopkins as the murderous psychopath "Hannibal the Cannibal" Lecter. Prepare to be in complete suspense as this movie proves to be one of the best psychological thrillers of all time. A true cat and mouse chase. Watch as Clarice, a female FBI agent, races against the clock to save a womans life from a mad man killer named Buffalo Bill. Allowing his victims to starve before he skins them, Clarice's only chance is to consult with Hannibal Lecter to find out where he is. A truly unforgettable horror film.
8) Rosemary's Baby (1968) A movie about a pregnant woman who struggles against witches and the forces of the devil. An event that leads her to deliver the spawn of satin. A totally disturbing movie. Enter into a realm of insanity as you feel for the characters and thank god that it wasn't you.
7) Halloween (1978) Michael Myers has since became a household name. Genuinely scary and extremely well crafted. A deranged knife-wielding killer set out to kill what is left of his family and all that get in his way on Halloween night. Masked and ready to kill, this movie will surely make you lock your doors at night.
6) Jaws (1975) I actually was terrified of this movie for the longest of times and was probably one of the millions of people who were scared at the beach to enter the water. Perhaps it was the fear that one great white shark would pop up at any moment or perhaps it was just because this film was so lifelike. Steven Spielberg brings to the screen a true classic of underwater horror. You'll feel trapped, isolated, and totally vulnerable. You'll watch as victims disappear from the destruction of this likely predator and scream with each attack.
5) The Shining (1980) Jack Nicholason plays Jack Torrance is asked to be the Overlook Motels Inn keeper for the winter in the Colorado Rockies. A classic haunted house with everywhere to run but nowhere to hide. Jack goes madly insane and dares to kill off his wife and child. All while ghosts play with his mind and even in ways help with the attempted murders. A tremendous sense of isolation along with an incrediable run for your life makes this movie a must see.
4) Poltergeist (1982) A supreme ghost story about poltergeists that kidnap a young little girl in the realm of her own house. Watch as the family tries to rescue her back while placing themselves in true danger. A memorable supernatural movie with extraordinary special effects and unforgettable suspense. I have watched this movie over a hundred times and each time I'm as scared as the first.
3) Friday the 13th (1980) Perhaps on the most recognizable horror movies of our century with an astonishing number of sequels. But in my own opinion, none out do the first. Watch as a mad man serial killer sets out to terrorize young teen camp counselors. Blood and Gore skyrockets to the top of his list. He kills whatever gets in his way. No exceptions. With killing, slashing, and hacking, this movie proves to be one the scariest of all time.
2) The Exorcist (1973) It was a tough decision but I had to put this movie second from the best. The Exorcist was definitely one of the most sensational and shocking horror movies of all times. Watch as one small child is terrorized by the devil and possession becomes the key. A true masterpiece of nauseating, horrendous special effects of swiveling, self-mutilation and witness the true "Good vs Evil".
1) The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) The grand daddy of all slasher films and perhaps one of the best of all time. Meet the family of totally crazed psycho who set out to terrorize and torment those they encounter. Leatherface is one of my favorites and perhaps the most memorable character. His face made of human skins, his appearance will truly make you shutter. A classic chase that will leave you watching the rest of the movie from underneath the covers.
This concludes my selection for my top ten best horror movie picks ever. Other honorable mentions include: The Birds (1963), The Night Of The Living Dead (1968), A Nightmare On Elm Street (1984), and Psycho (1960).
