Internal Frame Packs

Jul 26 '01

The Bottom Line Fit is the most important thing about a pack, make sure it is perfect.

The best advice I can give you on buying a backpack is to read as much as you can about the different types, brands, features, etc. You also need to know what you need the backpack for: a leisurely weekend backpacking trip, scaling Mt. Everest, doing some ice climbing, etc.

If you are going for a weekend backpacking trip, you need to make sure that the bag is not too big. Many people fall into the trap of carrying much more than they need. For a weekend trip, you need very few clothes, some food, a very small tent (tarp is better), first aid kit (small one), and a small stove. Something a little larger than a day pack will do just nicely. For longer hikes, or for technical hikes/climbs, you are going to need something with a bit more staying power.

First, figure out which kind of features you'll need, like an ice pick loop, daisy chains for climbing ropes, external pockets, and for which items, etc. My packs ALWAYS have a few external pockets. I find them invaluable for carrying extra water bottles, cameras, etc.

Second, find a good outdoors store near your home and call there. Ask if there is anyone on site who does a lot of hiking and ask to speak with them. They will be able to help you the most. Ask when you can come in to have him help you pick out and get fitted for a pack.

Yes...I said fitted. There are many packs on the market, and not all of them will fit you just right. It will take a lot of shopping around to make sure you have the right one. A good pack will have a lot of ways to adjust its fit. Sometimes, they are rather complicated to figure out, and you need someone with some experience to help you with it.

Make sure you try the pack on WITH A LOAD! Fill the pack with anything they will let you put in it. Put it on and walk around the store for a couple of minutes....browse for more items you may need, browse for items you don't need, just make sure you keep it on for at least 15 minutes fully loaded. If there is any sign of discomfort, try a new pack, and don't go back to that one no matter what. If you are having discomfort after 15 minutes in a store, imagine what that is going to feel like after 10 hours and 30 miles.

Once you find a pack that feels comfortable with a load, fits well, and has the room and features you want, it is time to break out the wallet.
