Facial Cleansers 101
Jul 23 '01
The Bottom Line Keep it simple. You want a cleanser to be non-foaming, and gentle enough to use around your eyes.
So your in the drug store, department store, even the grocery, looking for a cleanser. Some advertisement has finally convinced you that soap is drying. Well, for the average person, it is. Have you ever looked at the ring of scum in the sink or bath tub after you use soap? It deposits that on your skin, clogging your pores. Enough said.
Cleansers come in all different scents, colors and chemical combinations. With acids, without acids, with scrubs and without.
Do you like the squeaky clean feeling? Well it's about the worst thing you can achieve for your skin. You are stripping all the natural oils off your skin every time you achieve this result. You want a non-foaming cleanser. If it foams it contains sodium laurel sulfate and will strip your skin. After using a cleanser your face should feel soft and supple.
Choose a cleanser that is without. A cleanser does not stay on your face long enough for you to benefit from any additives. If you want to use a specific chemical treatment such as alpha hydroxies or retinol use it in a leave on treatment.
Scrubs. Stay away from scrubs. Especially for your face. Scrubs Rip your skin, CAUSING ACNE. That's right, causing. A minute rip in your skin opens the way for acne, you reach up and touch your face after wiping your kids nose or worse and Ta Da, big ole zit.
That's another big no no. Don't touch your face. It is exposed to enough with out you wiping your grimy hands across it. It's impossible to not touch your face sometimes, but be aware of when you do.
Cleansers are easy, the more basic it is the better it is for your skin. Just remember, you want to it to clean your skin and remove makeup. If it is gentle enough to use around your eyes you have found the winner!
