This movie was based on true accounts of the murder trial of Victoria Thompson, 18, who was accused of murdering her husband, Oliver. This is a period piece, set in the 1800's in New Zealand, when marriages were arranged. Especially marriages of orphaned women.
Victoria, left at an orphanage by her mother at birth, is a small demure woman. Quiet, placid, obedient. When Oliver, an older 'gentleman' comes to the orphanage he takes Victoria as his bride. At the time she was 17 years old and had lived her entire life in sheltered seclusion.
Marriage to such a man as Oliver proves tramatic to Victoria, especially once his abuse and secret sexual desires are revealed. There seems little that Victoria can do except try to regain her freedom.
I'm not saying Victoria actually killed her husband, you'd have to watch the movie to find that out. I am just saying this was based on the trial of Victoria for the murder of her husband. Things were different in that time and place.
Lets discuss the primary actors in this release. Victoria Thompson was played by Jodie Foster. Even though she was 24 at this filming she gave every appearance of a lithe 17 year old. Secondly, Jodie Foster was born to play the part of a woman in period pieces. She has the incredible beauty and form to wear all those high necked gowns, form fitting bodices and floor dragging skirts. And with her hair upswept, that incredible neck ... wow, she just blows you away. Pardon me while I blather on.
Now her acting in this one, she was an angel faced, delicate, sensitive, dirty nasty little witch. Yehaw!
John Lithgow was Oliver Thompson. He is twice Jodie's age in real life and they gave him some extra sliminess in this movie. Personally I love Lithgow, he is a constantly changing personality, very diverse in his roles. As much as I like him, I wanted a cleansing after watching this movie.
Known by both Shocked and Mesmerized, this movie was directed by Michael Laughlin, screenplay by Jerzy Skolimowski. It received no awards and little attention. It is the kind of movie that leaves you feeling a little nasty after watching it, like you need a shower or even a theological intervention.
Filming was done on location in New Zealand. What little scenery you viewed was very nice but the majority of the film was done inside the shaded rooms and hidden spaces of the Thompson home.
