Ok, so we weren't expecting a palace for the price but we did at least expect a clean room without a permeating odor.
After booking through tripreservations.com for $100 a night, we were then required to pay an additional $30.00 resort fee that we were told was mandatory and gave us access to the tower during 4 limited daytime hours and some other things we had no intention of using. The discount rate we got on the internet just became not so discounted. When we arrived to the room we also discovered two queen beds instead of the one king we had requested. The bed was not a big deal really and certainly forgivable.
What was more surprising was the ring of what we guessed to be cigarette ash around the entire bottom of the sink. And this was a non-smoking room. The mystery would soon be solved though when we tried to wash it out. After the water slowly drained from the sink, the nastiest smell that reeked like sewer rose out of the drain. We tried to make the best of it and just closed the drain and went to gamble.
The casino is fine, although the wait for free drinks while playing slots was longer than any other casino we went to.
Upon returning to the room late, with the smell still lingering, we decided that we would request a new room in the morning.
We called the front desk and asked to switch rooms because of the smell. The person at the front desk asked if the sink backed up, without me mentioning it so it is obviously it's a problem they are used to. He quickly agreed to a room switch.
All we had to do was go down 17 floors, wait at the front desk for the new key cards, go back to the 17th floor, carry our own luggage to the 19th floor where our new room was. Which takes quite a bit of time to do when you only have a weekend to spend in Vegas. For our trouble though they did agree to a late 3pm check out time on Sunday.
Our new room appeared to be much better upon entering and we were relieved. We even ran the water in the sink to make sure, The first time we used the bathroom and flushed though, it became apparent that the problem at the Stratosphere is much larger than just one room. Firstly, flushing the toilet sounded like a jet taking off. It was so loud it was alarming, especially when you are shut in the tiny bathroom with it.
Then, as soon as we used the sink again, the same smell started all over. We decided to make the best of it and just keep the sink filled with water and the drain closed as a barrier between us and the smell.
The night just got worse, as it was impossible to maintain a comfortable temperature in the room. It was either too hot with the heater on or too cold with the wind seemingly blowing right though the thin window. Not even the heavy drapes helped. I was even woken up at about 5am by a strange high pitched whistle that I at first thought was a vacuum cleaner outside in the hall. But I soon realized it was the wind outside blowing in some tiny crevice of the window. No wonder it was cold in here.
We woke and vowed to never come back. And to spend a little time writing reviews like this one so others don't have to have their one weekend away dampened by a bad hotel room.
