| c3ntaur's Full Review: Windchaser Windchaser 12,000 BTU Portable Air Cond... |
I bought one of these in the summer of 2002 as a compromise between my budget and being able to sleep. I'm still planning to one day install central AC, but meanwhile my Windchaser has performed like a champ. I've been enjoying quality sleep even on nights after the daytime temperature had risen into the triple digits. Speaking of those triple-digit days, the temperature in my master bedroom (about 300 square feet, with 50 square feet of southwest-exposed glass) has never risen above 80 with the Windchaser running.
Quiet, reliable, powerful, and carefree are the words that come to mind when I think about my Windchaser. The only maintenance I've ever needed to do on it is to periodically clean the air filters.
I can't remember using the sleep timer, but some people might find it handy. There's a bright LED display that shows the current temperature on the console, and it's easy to read from across the room. Other features include low, medium, high, and auto fan settings, a dehumidifier setting, and a high water alarm (only necessary if you choose not to take advantage of the built-in drain pump and hose). All controls are available on the unit itself and also on the remote.
Oh, and in case you missed it, this air conditioner is PORTABLE. It's on wheels, and you can move it from room to room (easy on hard floors, takes a bit of shoving on carpet). All you need is a standard outlet to plug it into and a place to route the exhaust hose out of (usually a window).
I have only one very minor complaint about this product: The exhaust hose fitting on the air conditioner end is not very tight, and sometimes the hose will pop out. At some point I'll drill a couple of holes and use some small bolts and nuts to secure it, but so far putting the hose back into the fitting every few days has not been annoying enough to bother.
Aside from this very small deficiency, my Windchaser has performed extremely well and is a great value (I could have paid twice as much for a DeLonghi -- it has basically the same features but it's less powerful). I would recommend it to anyone looking for a room air conditioner.
