Japanese Animation (Pokemon, Sailor Moon) : What Is Discussed in Japan

Mar 19 '01

The Bottom Line Discussion on animation programs. Advantages, disadvantages, and the how-tos for the management.

We have been exporting a lot of animation products to all over the world. If you see the animation where characters' facial expressions are richer and more elaborated, you are probably watching Japanese animation, though not limited to. The majority of Japanese animation comes to the US on video, which is off the topic. On this review, I use "pokemon" and "sailor moon" as the examples, and introduce you what is discussed in Japan, the animation kingdom.

Let me start with the descriptions on these two animation. Assuming you have already watched the program, I describe their meanings behind the screen in both the nasty and the friendly senses. (If you haven't watch them, I recommend you to check. They are one type of Japanese subculture.)

Nasty Descriptions
pokemon
If you want to be a master (read an experienced adult), you have to train your fellows so that they fight for you at the risk of their lives. The requirement for the master is the control over your fellows. The true master should be able to beat up all the competitors. The bad (read tough) competitors always come back with creative and innovative plots. Thus the master can use any types of weapons, and drive them down to the hell.

sailor moon
If the people get disturbed, the moon is angry. The messengers from the moon should work for the social justice which is defined by the moon. Because the moon is the super power, and because it is angry, the disturbing person should be erased (read killed). The scope of the disturbance in concern is not limited to be social. Even if one single person is annoyed by the third party, the moon authorizes its messengers to terminate that third party.

Friendly Descriptions
pokemon
If you want to pursue your goal, make a lot of friends, and find your helpers. The honesty and the consistent efforts are the best strategies. Cooperate with your friends by sharing the future goal with them, and work as a team. You are rewarded very much sooner or later.

sailor moon
Even though you have a bad day, you are not alone. Somebody is always paying the attention for the benefit of you. Before your emotional distrust becomes fatal, somebody will always send helpers for you. Don't cry. Keep being patient and motivated. Somebody will bring a miracle for you.

Discussion
If you read these two types of description, you know the advantages and disadvantages of the animation by now. The bright sides and the dark sides are very clear.

On one hand, for those who suffers from attention disorder (AD) for example, the animation is often highly instructive and superb media. But on the other hand, the animation encourages unreasonably fatal violence for the purpose of pursuing the person specific goal.

Face the facts the kids love TV, and that the parents cannot always restrict kids from TV programs. Given these facts, the parents, as the supervisors, should play the responsible rolls. The parents have to educate the kids on how to behave or react to the society in general with the rational moral.

The animation producers are also responsible, but it is unlikely that animation producers react with the very society-friendly moral. This is because the animation is almost always produced with the economic (read money-making) reasons. As long as there is the demand, the animation producers find the business.

Nevertheless, there is a way for the society to eliminate the presumably risky animation. Work from the demand side, and eliminate the demand completely. No demand means no business. This job can be done by the government to some extent. But the main party to do this job is the parents and the social organizations that recognize the fatal risks from the animation.
