| Seanster's Full Review: WebGear Aviator Wireless Networking Kit |
I realized that getting a network to work is no easy task. But this job took all my knowledge, time, and patience to get it to work. Don't try this at home.
It took me three solid days, working over 4 hours a day to get the Aviator and the Internet Sharing Software to work. The Aviator is supposed to work at 125 feet and have speeds of up to 1 Mbps. It's a wireless 900 MHz network kit that comes with an ISA parallel-port add-on card, two cables, and a parallel port Aviator. Getting the hardware installed was fairly easy. The software part, however, was a nightmare.
I attempted to connect two computers a Win 98 and Win 95 computer. The Win 95 computer had the printer and modem. Installing the software on the Win 98 computer was a breeze. Unfortunately, the Win 95 computer had to be manually installed. That's right, every little protocol, interrupt, and annoying little quirk had to be personally attended to. After two days, it still didn't work. The computers knew that each other existed. But when I tried to get them to communicate, it told me that "The Server timed-out while preparing for remote test-execution". The Win 95 computer was 20 feet away, although it was behind a wall. So I bought another cable and put it through the ceiling. It still gave me the error, even though the interference level was low. Then, a few hours later, it worked. To this day, I have no idea why. The problem is that it still just shuts off for no reason.
The diagnostic software is poorly designed and useless. The Internet Connection Software still doesn't work that well. All in all, it was quite a bit of trouble to set up. You had better know quite a bit about networking and patience before you try to install this beastly piece of hardware.
There is one good thing. Windows 98 installation couldn't be easier. It really was a cinch. If you have two Windows 98 machines, then this might work well for you. Otherwise, forget it.
