| gregmay's Full Review: Nintendo Game Boy Camera |
For $49, you can buy yourself a small accessory that can make any Gameboy a digital camera. True, it's not the best quality. And it's not going to do well in low-light or distant shots.
But you get what you pay for, and you get a lot in this durable and handy little package.
It comes in a variety of colors, can store up to 30 pictures (for a long time too), has a decent sized lens, and is exceptionally simple.
Buy the printer and a few spare rolls of paper too- but most importantly, buy a PC connector cable, made by MadCatz. My eyes practically rolled back in my head when I found one at the local Best Buy- for $13, including software. And it works well, transferring quickly to my PC through the serial port and allowing them to be saved, sent by email, or printed.
But back to the camera itself.
A few little games are included that are addictive but stupid and allow you to place your face on the character. You can do a montage (turning four shots into one), you can morph images (it usually just ends up looking odd), you can take panoramic shots (a feature that is often overlooked, it can work vertically or horizontally and prints out equivalent to four regular images), you can add frames, you can time lapse, you can edit your images (with stamps or by hand)... it's tough to think of much else you'd want to do with a little 1x1 black and white image.
I've taken my on vacations, used it in art museums, for portrait work, and attached small photos onto the Christmas cards. Perfect for a kid who wants to learn about photography, or the adult who wants to try digital photography without spending too much money. It's like having one of those sit-down instamatic photo booths in the palm of your hand. But even more fun.
