| Antoine's Full Review: Real Networks RealJukebox |
RealJukebox is an incredibly powerful concept: this piece of free software will create, manage and play your entire music collection right on your hard drive.
The most impressive feature is the copying of CDs. As soon as you pop a CD into your computer, RealJukebox starts playing it and simultaneously records it on your hard drive. This is done several times faster than playback speed, so that the CD is usually copied by the time you get to the third or fourth track. RealJukebox also identifies the album by looking up an online database of CDs (at www.cddb.com), and automatically enters album, artist and track information in the database. Similarly, any music you download can be added to the database.
The database lets you search in multiple ways (title, artist, etc.). You can download selected tracks to portable music players (e.g. Diamond Rio). The "Plus" version of RealPlayer introduces more options such as better quality recording and more database fields.
I've used RealJukebox for months, and only recently removed it from my computer. I think it's been the cause of many of my PC's crashes. And when it works, it either slows everything down or "skips" a lot if I'm doing anything else on the computer (note: I use a 350MHz Pentium II with 128 Megs of RAM). Finally, I don't really like its user interface: it's unattractive, clunky, and doesn't present all the information you want.
Still, I've been convinced by the concept and will keep looking out for upgraded versions or competitive products. The idea of putting all your music in one place is just too attractive: no more CD changing, easy creation of playlists, database management, etc.
