The Anti-Oprah Bookclub by RKose | Mar 26 '00 My friend and I would like to start an Anti-Oprah bookclub. The reason, you may ask? Because, while Oprah has gotten many women weaned off of their Romance novel addictions, she has also gotten others to so pathetically cling to her words and opinions...Return to opinion

Vonnegut's "Breakfast of Champions" (Reply to this comment)

I would love, love, LOVE to see Oprah have these ladies read something like Breakfast of Champions, if for no other reason than to get a cheap thrill knowing that umpteen million suburban housewives would seeing Vonnegut's drawing of an a**hole in the book. No kidding. Childish, I know. But still thrilling.

Amen to That! (Reply to this comment)

Having read a couple Oprah books on the insistence of friends, I see a couple of common threads running through them. One: that of abused women coming to terms with themselves, and two: the whole African-American experience. Don't get me wrong, both these subjects a worthwhile reading material. But a steady diet of them makes for a boring (and ultimately bored)reader. Why does Oprah's list not have any "happy" books on it? Why not, for a change, something like a Kingsolver book? Where strong women come to term with life without having been abused? Never gonna happen. I will post my additions to your list in the future. For now, thank you for being a sane voice in these troubled literary times.

Yes, they do do things a bit more efficiently now. We get the books into our store usually the very afternoon that Oprah announces her new Title. So she is communicating with the publishers beforehand at least!
And yes, like I said, she has gotten more people reading. Still, for those who think she's the Goddess of talkshows (and therefore 'truth')a lot of fine literature (and thinking) is lost.

But, why would you want to start an anti-Oprah book club? I pity the poor woman that can't think for themselves. I have read several of her recommended books, but she certainly doesn't have that kind of influence over me that I can't make my own decisions.

I was working in a bookstore when the Oprah book club premiered - what a headache! Your review made me chuckle at the memory (and remember to give my daily thank you to the powers that be that I'm no longer working in retail).
I just hope they've changed the way they do things - when the club started, Oprah and co. were incredibly closed-mouthed about what books would be recommended until the episodes hit the air, leaving bookstores and libraries scrambling to fill the sudden demand for mostly heretofore unknown/unpopular titles.
Honestly, I found the whole thing downright scary (does Oprah have some sort of mind-control device we don't know about??), but I have to say anything that gets people to read is a good thing. It would just be nice if it also got them to think. ;)
