First novels are rarely raved about, yet "Daisy Fay and the Miracle Man" should be. In fact, after the successful adaptation of Fannie Flagg's better known novel "Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistlestop Cafe" into Hollywood silicon, I am surprised that Daisy Fay has yet to be made into a movie as well.
The novel follows the life of Daisy in journal form and the various southern traditions and possibly in-bred people she meets. It is almost a Flagg trademark to write such caricatures about the people that even while we are laughing, we recognise them as friends, family, co-workers and neighbors.
Daisy's upbringing is made even more complex by her alcoholic father's get rich schemes and the cold war that is fought between her parents eventually forcing her mother to leave. Once the only real adult in Daisy's life is gone, Daisy's father and his business partner Jimmy, decide that only a miracle can save them all financially. Daisy's father does not allow morals or truth to slow him down in his search for the quck money and with the help of a local charletan preacher, decide to 'resurrect' his daughter from drowning.
Of course, it doesn't go as it was planned, partly thanks to Daisy's very developed personality and to me, that is when the story really begins.
The book will make you laugh and think. I'm not sure I could catagorize this as into the gay/lesbian genre, there are sympathetic, supportive and downright funny gay characters. Too many writers seem to make the mistake of thinking if you are supportive of gay/lesbian characters, they cannot be funny--they must be serious. But all characters in this book, Daisy included, are funny. I think "Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe" is probably more gay/lesbian oriented, however this book should please everyone.
