Auto Auctions Legal Rip Offs Beware

Jun 01 '00

Chances are you have been interested in attending an auto auction. Before you do you should do a little research. If the deals sound to good to be true...they most likely are not.

I have attended many auto auctions in California. They always promise very nice cars at very low prices. It is a rarity when you do find great deals.

In California after you buy a car in auction you must pay taxes and vehicle license fees. That is where they ( auctioneers or worst of all BROKERS) get you by the way NEVER TRUST an AUTO BROKER.

For example, let's say you purchased a car at an auction for $5,000.00 dollars. With tax, DMV license charge, smog and paper work they can come up to $1,500.00 dollars (which can increase if the previous owner neglected to pay his or her registration dues) so
you would be paying about $6,500.00 for that car. Where they get you is the paper work.

As a consumer you have the right to file the paper work yourself in order to avoid the "paper work" charges. If you did it your self on a $5,000.00 dollar car(assuming the tags are current and it passes the California smog check) you would pay around $430.00 dollars. That's a savings of $1,070.00 So you tell me where does the other money go?

Again before you decide to go to an auction do some research and if you do decide to use a broker (which I don't recommend) Have them put everything in writing. If they don't want to it's because they are going to rip you off.

I know any negative feedback or comments will only be from auctioneers or auto brokers who will deny this and pose as satisfied buyers. Don't get taken by these people, you are better off buying a car off the street and running the plates through your Police Department or Department of Motor Vehicle office.

*** Always have all charges in writing or research done before you attend an auction.

****** Also chances are if a vehicle is in an auction it's because it is ready to break down or owes a lot on the vehicle registration.
